This blend of rums aged between 4 and 6 years is the flagship of the Diplomático brand from Distilerias Unidas in La Miel, Venezuela on the northern slopes of the Andes mountains. The molasses used to make all of the Diplomático rums is sourced from the La Miel sugar mill located a few kilometers from the distillery. Originally built by the Seagrams Co. in the 1950s, the distillery is adjacent to the Hacienda Saruro, where much of the sugar cane is grown.
After fermentation, all of the rum at this distillery is distilled to about 54% ABV in a large pot still then redistilled in continuous column stills where several product streams are condensed.
Characterized by a rich aroma with hints of chocolate, vanilla and cola nut, the initial taste is viscous and leads fluently into the creamy body and lingering slightly smoky oak finish. Despite being considered a sweet rum by many rum drinkers, the finish invites another sip and belies the sweeter body of this aged rum.
