Zacapa - Ron Zacapa XO Zacapa - Ron Zacapa XO

The premium rum from Zacapa which is aged longer than Zacapa Centenario with a slightly drier flavor and finish. Like the other Zacapa rums XO is aged in a combination of bourbon, delicate sherry and Pedro Ximenez wine casks to create a unique depth of flavor and character. After three years the used barrels are emptied and then recharred while the contents are married with other rums in the first part of the Zacapa solera system. Scraping and recharring the used barrels give the rum a sweeter flavor from the newly charred wood.

Montanya Oro Rum is distilled and blended with San Juan mountain spring water. Despite the relatively short time in a barrel, the complexity of this pot still spirit is nicely enhanced by contact with the wood. Hints of toffee in the aroma lead to a body of expresso, toffee, vanilla and honey until roasted coffee beans dominate the slightly smoky finish.

Montanya is one of the few distillers to make a good rum in the first year of operation. I look forward to tasting more Montanya rums in the future.

Mount Gilboa Rum Mount Gilboa Rum
Distillation of Mount Gilboa Rum is a three step process that takes 2-3 days in the 5,000 liter copper stills. First, the 6% abv fermented molasses is distilled to 68% abv. This condensate is diluted with water and redistilled to 80% abv. In the third distillation, condensate from the second distillation is diluted with water then distilled to 80% abv. The fresh rum is diluted to 60% abv then aged in nominal 190 liter, once-used American oak barrels for 2 - 3 years. Experiments are being conducted using used 400 liter brandy barrels.

This medium-bodied gold rum has a slightly spicy entry followed by a rich body full of fruit and nut flavors. Hints of coconut and smoky oak linger in the long finish.

Currently only available in Barbados and the UK, Frank Ward is exploring limited availability in the US market.

Distilled and aged in Cuba, this rum is reported to be made in Havana and bottled for Lapimar srl.

Not dominated by wood or smoke, I found this dark rum to have have a well balanced medium body typical of the Cuban style of rum from the larger producers.

The finish of dark nuts is somewhat dry and well behaved. I look forward to drinking more of this rum when the opportunity avails itself.
