The Associated Press reports that a new rum distillery
is planned to open next year in Central Puerto Rico.
It is encouraging to the rum industry that two new, large production distilleries will be in production next year. Over the previous two decades more distilleries have closed than opened. Other distilleries have been upgraded and the general outlook for the rum consumer is more choices and with more distilleries coming online, there will be more competition which will help keep prices on the liquor store shelves for sugar cane spirits relatively low compared to other distilled spirits. That is, unless the government decides to raise taxes on alcohol.
