I would like to try the old Pyrat XO and Cask 23. I've seen them on some online stores, however, you really need to be careful. I think they may not have updated their sites...in other words, they are calling the new versions the old.

Hammer,

I have found a few in the 59,000/60,000 serial number. Have a few of the 2006 XO's too. Set them side by side, Planters stock is very dark and the XO is semi transparent. The taste difference is evident.
RumInTheMorning has a very good pictere for the color difference.

Picked up a couple in the mid 50,000s and a mid 90,000s that are great. Also picked up some that are in the late 160,000s that have the white box, the neck chain said Pyrat Rum instead of Anguilla Rum and the difference (did a vertical of the 90K, 160K and 1.6M tonight) were staggering.... not even close.

As a side note, picked up a very old Pyrat Pistol and it was between the 90K and 160K versions of the XO.

I stumbled on a case of Pyrat XO all in the white box...they're all in the 36k range. I had never had Pyrat before but I trusted Spun_cookie and grabbed 11 of the 12 of them. The one I left behind had leaked a bit from the owner storing the bottle on it's side. I kept 5 for myself and sent 6 to the cookie as I'm more of a bourbon guy but I'm branching out into other spirits. So far I've added Pyrat XO in the 36k range, Vizcaya XO, ED15, Diplimatico, some recent bottling of Pyrat XO ($10.99 a bottle), Sailor Jerry, Captain Morgan, Mount Gay Silver, Captain Morgan Private Stock, Appleton XO, and Pusser's Navy Rum...with the first 4 of the bottlings being drank neat..after that the balance are being used for mixing. I have to say that of the ones that I've tried neat the old Pyrat XO so far is my favorite. Thanks for the tip on buying them Spun_cookie!

Rum Dusty Hunting has been good to me of late for the Planters Gold. A buddy and I have run across some bottles between 25K-99K range.

I have also found some differences with the bottling:
Three label changes:
  • Water mark style God (up to 198K that I have seen)
  • God to the left in a rectangle (one that was 330K ish
  • God on the left in bronze (450K though today as far as I know)

Two card board box changes (there are lots of other boxes X-mas, picture, round, others?):
  • White Box from Anguilla (up to 165K that I have seen)
  • Orange Box from Pyrat (one at 330K ish)

Five Medallion changes:
  • Anguilla with no writing on the back (before 20K that I saw)
  • Anguilla with with a sticker on the back of writing (20-50K)
  • Anguilla with writing (I think my 36Ks have writing, need to check when I get home - though 160K)
  • Pyrat with writing that included small children (200K-550Kish)
  • Pyrat that took the reference to small children off (550K ish through today)

As far as I can tell, through about the 120-140K range, the rum is all the same. The 145K-200K the rum is a little lighter, not a complex and smooth, but very good (still very dark compared to today). By 300K-500K the rum is lighter, but still pretty complex and unique. I have not had any I recall between 600-900K. After 1M it is mostly a great mixer only. I have a few more 300-500K left at home that I will be lighter with in use...

As far as the Pistols, are they indeed out of production, or will the be coming back?
