Captain Morgan is what brought me to rum in the first place, so I have a long and affectionate relationship there. I have since tasted much finer rum, but to me there's no substitute for Captain Morgan's Private Stock in a rum and coke. It's also a great mixer for rum drinks. I don't typically drink it straight, as to me there are much better rums for that, but the CMPS is clearly better than the original for sipping, if that's what you are going to do.

Ok there is a lot for me to chime in on here, so lets see if I can get this without hurting feelings, but then again, on here its never about hurting feelings its about getting educated by all who respond on here so here goes.......
Tebow made a good point about the Captain Morgans Spiced Vs Private Stock. But I truely believe that the Private Stock is a better flavored rum than the orignal. It s a good shooter, and a great mixer, but I am still working on the sipping so I can't give props for that. Private Stock is not your top shelf rum, but its darn good.
Some have mentioned the Bacardi 8 on here and I just can't get with that. I bought a bottle of it about 6 months ago, and to be honest with you, I sipped it, didn't care for it, mixed it and was still not impressed. There is a flavor in there that can't put my taste buds on, but it reminds me of prunes for some reason so I do see myself going back to that.
I hate to say it but you can't discount Sailor Jerry......no no no.....that to me has got to be the best mixer out there, and it really goes good with melon blast jello shots.....had a lot of those this past weekend. Sailor Jerry may be on the lower shelves, but that stuff just tastes soooooo good with Dr Pepper its not even funny. Shooting it I do not recommend, but mixing it, you better.......its a must for everyones collection. Now I am saying this without even having a go of the 100 proof Captain Morgan. The same person that discounted Sailor Jerry put this stuff above it, well I will make it my personal weekend trip to head south to South Carolina and find me a bottle of it and put my personal recommendation on the comparrison. Its a spiced rum so its gotta be good I would think.
I have also tried the Pyrat XO. I liked it, but have yet to make another go of it. When I tried it I had just gotten into drinking again and was trying all types of stuff and have calmed down and now I am getting my collection up to where I can pick and choose if I desire, so Pyrat is on the list again I just need to make that leap.
Tebow, I am also one of those guys who seem to mix more than I sip, but that doesn't mean we are bad rum drinkers, I like what I am doing with the rum and enjoy coming on here shooting off my opinions, but more than anything I value everyones opinion on here as well. So if you got offended by the above, have a drink on me and we can call it good.

Thanx for the input about Bacardi 8. Ppl say good things about it, but I promised my Wife that I'd never bring home Bacardi...
I KNOW that PS isn't 'top shelf', because it would be 35-$40 a bottle and I couldn't afford it, as an 'every day' rum.
I seldom add more than an ice cube, but I wouldn't mix anything that isn't sippable.
I might try Sailor Jerry again, because the first time, I had a bottle of Pampero and Zaya around also. It just didn't seem like it was 'rummy' enough. If you haven't tried CM 100 proof, go for it. I CAN'T discount SJ, because almost nothing but nastystuff is cheaper. It really is a marvel, if you only have a few $$...
The 'flavor' of PS may not be very complex, but is there ANYTHING that has that 'sweet and smooth' for a reasonable price?
(Pyrat IS, but the orangy taste is too much)
Seriously, I'd LOVE to really like Pyrat XO, since it garners such wide acceptance, but I never add grand marnier to my rum, because that's disgusting!

If you try the Sailor Jerry again I will make sure to buy me a bottle of the Pyrat XO and have another try at it. I did like it, seemed to have a nice flavor to it, but once again, its been a while and I will have another go of it after I go a few rounds with the Four Square that should be delivered to my house this week.

I've tried mixing Pyrat XO with Coke. I didn't like it. Pyrat Pistol, on the other hand, mixes very well with rum, and is pretty cheap besides. Sailor Jerry is also an excellent mixer with coke. Maybe I've just trained my tastebuds to it, but I prefer the flavor of CMPS with Coke to any other rum.

I have tried it straight. I do recommend it. It's sweeter than the XO, with a stronger burn, but a brighter taste, if that makes sense. It usually comes in a tall, thin bottle that's about half the volume of an XO bottle. I like it.
