Is that really fair? lol
Remember, I like smooth an' sweet. I had to put a spoonful of caramel in this Rhum Barbancourt. I wish they would do that type of thing beforehand, so I don't feel so criminal.
Have you tried Ron Zacapa?
I'm going to check out Pyrat pistol, methinks.
My wife thinks I'm nuts, but it is fun to check out different rums!

Can't remember where I read it, but I read somewhere about a guy who puts a vanilla bean in his new bottles of rum and leaves it for like a week to sweeten it. You might try that instead of adding caramel.

I am really interested in trying that for sure. I will get me a bottle of Sailor Jerry and have my wife pull a shot of the regular and then with the bean that was cured in it.

Have you tried Brugal Ron Anejo? I certainly like the flavor, compared to RhumBarbancourt. The Barbancourt is only the 3-star, to be fair... There's a sale on Matusalem locally and I might try it out... Have you tried it?

Yes the Brugal Anejo is good, but give yourself a chance to try the Extra Vieijo... Delicious!! It's on the top of my list (but I'm no pro) and can be found for dirt cheap in the Dominican.
I mentionned Mamajuana earlier. The Anejo works great in that concoction. With a little honey and red wine, those roots make a great rum based liqueur.

Sorry, I thought it was more well known.
This Wikipedia page should give you a good idea:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mama_Juana
I follow this recipe (1/4 honey, 1/4 red wine and 1/2 amber rum). I've tried it with a sprinkle of cinnamon and it was delicious. So what you do is you fill up a bottle full of twigs and bark with the liquids mentionned above. I would let those sit for a couple months (especially your first batch) and then drink directly from the bottle (with the twigs) or empty its contents in another bottle so you can make anothe batch.
A site where you can order the concoction, if you can't make it to the Dominican Republic:
