Default Old Port Deluxe

Last Thursday I took a trip to a boutique Liquor store I've been wanting to go to for a little while to to investigate the selection of rums that they carried. To date I found the best selection of rums in the Edmonton area I've seen so far. After sampling a couple of their offerings I ended up leaving with a bottle of Old Port Deluxe from Amrut Distilleries from India. Two factors drove this purchase; the shop keeper said she doubted they were ever getting this bottle again (the three on the shelf were going to be it) and it was a departure from the usual Caribbean rums that are all I've had. And at only $35CAD I figured the uniqueness was worth it.

So, for reference here's the bottle I'm currently enjoying.

Cutting right to the chase, this rum is all caramel. From the opening of the paper sealed screw cap, to the pour, to the nose out of the glass, this is unmistakeably caramel.

I chose to try this as a sipper for the first go. See what it has to offer and if it gets demoted to mixer then so be it.

It's been demoted to mixer.

The caramel held up for the tasting, but there was a roughness to the overall flavour that I can't quite get past. I don't have a palette that can really discern a multitude of varying flavours, but there's something out of place here. Slightly spice like, and too overbearing on the overall experience. It was kinda chemically, but not quite like medicine. I think the strong caramel was really the only saving grace here.

By the second snifter my taste buds had numbed a bit and this is actually going down not too bad. but overall there's still an immaturity there that prevents this from actually being a great rum.

Overall I do like this rum. I think it would likely go really well with a bit of cola, or with some fruit juice that can knock that off taste down a notch. But as a sipper I think it falls just a little short. It's certainly a lot better than any dark "well" rum that you'd find and I'm happy to have it as an addition to my collection.

Nice scoop for your collection.

I have never tried that rum myself but I have read tasting notes about that rum and the biggest thing about it is its caramel taste/nose. What drinks have you tried it in?

None so far. I just had a couple ounces last night with an ice cube to try it out. I have lots left and will likely be trying some things with it in the future.

Hi Jason

I too found a bottle of this Rum while I was traveling through your fair city. (Actually just a little to the North in ST Albert at Lacombe Spirits.) Karim the owner of the store allows me try a small dram from time to time (He often has new rums behind his counter for sampling) and I am a frequently flyer who loves to stop at his shop for Rum Advice if I happen to layover in Edmonton.

The distillery in question is a very famous one for producing fine Scotch (OOPS! I mean Single Malt Whisky). According to their own advertising (take that for what it is worth) they do not add caramel to anything they produce. Not that that is important because if you taste caramel then that is what you taste.

I happen to like Scotch (I mean Single Malt Whisky) as much as I like Rum, and so I have also bought their Unpeated Simgle Malt whiskey. Now this is where I'm going with this. That same unique spicy tone you find in the rum is also in the whiskey. I happen to think it is very unique and tastey. I believe the flavour is if you will indigenous to their region. My bet would be that it is local flora in the area around the aging facility. (Much like the local fields of Heather impart their unique flavour into Highland Park Scotch whisky.)

The flavour itself is kind of a combination terriyaki/mild curri mix in my imagination. Probably way off and biased by my imaginings of Indian/Oriental spices.

As I have only had one sample of this rum to date I am not qualified to have an opinion other than to say it is very unique. I am qualified to opine on the Amrut Whisky however and I find it ranks very well with other Scotch (I mean single malt) whiskies.
