Compared Brugal Anejo to Extra Viejo

Stopped at my local store on the way home to see if they had anything new in. Picked up a bottle of the newly available Brugal Extra Viejo. Got home and had to crack open the bottle and compare it to the Brugal Anejo I also have stocked in my cabinet.

Comparison:

Price: Anejo-$13 Extra Viejo-$26
Color: The Extra Viejo is just a tad darker in color.
Nose: The Viejo had a slighly less buttery/toffee smell with more of an oak aroma
Taste: Took quite a few sips to really pick any difference between the two rums. The Anejo actually had more of a smooth toffee flavor the Viejo was a bit dryer but not much. I actually gave my wife a few sips of both and she swore they were the same rum.

Conclusion: I liked the slightly drier taste of the Extra Viejo, but, for me at least, I am not able to justify a 2x price difference between the Extra Viejo and the Anejo. But the great thing about rum is there are a large variety of profiles to fit everyone's different taste preference.

Thanks, bluewave6 for the notes. I, too, find the Viejo quite a bit drier. It is a go-to rum for my Q-Tonics + lime, now.

Brugal and Barcelo along with Cruzan are amongst the few who have cracked the Puerto Rico market.

Bob (The Rumelier) and I had a discussion about Brugal's aged dark rum products.

Their anejo is a great mixer although a tough sipper in my opinion.

Their new iteration of white or clear rum is now showing up here, and it is selling for more than the Anejo. It is aged and shows a wonderful evocation of a white rum in my opinion.

I like the white as well, and find it mixes good with sprite and a lime wedge (I believe its called a santo libre). I haven't tried the extra viejo but when I do I will keep your notes in mind bluewave

I agree with bluewave, the Extra Viejo is dryer and longer than the aсejo, here in the DR the diference in price is minimal less than 2 dollars per bottle, 220 pesos aсejo 280 pesos Extraviejo per liter.

I used just bypass the Aсejo and go straight for the Extra Viejo being the rum snob I am, (I think it's the Cuban style dark bottle) but recently I have been giving it a good try as a mixer. They are both popular rums here in the local and Dominican bars, with the 375ml being the better selling size bottle. I was hoping for maybe some new products now they have been taken over by a Scottish company. (maybe some rum aged in old whisky barrels or older style rums not as expensive as the Siglo de Oro??)

I prefer the Extra Viejo, but the Anejo is a great value and it mixes nice in tonic.
