For me,... it depends on the cocktail. Originally, my interest in Rums were largely based on a "neat only" or over and ice cube basis. But as my experiential base has increased, I've been mixing with Rum with increasing frequency adding the element of variety. But every cocktail seems to demand it's own particular Rum or style. My favorites for the standards such as a:
Dark & Stormy -
1. Goslings Black Seal (seems to be this Rum's niche)
2. Cruzan Black Strap (works well with the more assertive ginger beers)
Mai Tai -
(After trying most of the Mai Tai combos tested and rated by Rum Dood on his site, I've settled on my own 3 combos...... for now.)
1. 50-50 Bacardi 8 (I hate that I like Bacardi anything) combined with El Dorado 5 yr.
2. 50-50 Bacardi 8 with El Dorado 8 yr.
3. 50-50 Bacardi 8 with Diplomatico Reserva
Ti Punch
1. Neisson's Blanc
2. La Favorite Blanc
3. Clement Blanc
Tropical Fruit based cocktails
1. El Dorado 3 yr. White
2. Plantation 3 Star White
Hot Buttered Rum
(a lot of Rums work well with this hot cocktail, but this is what I use. It's inexpensive and tasty)
1. Kirkland's Spiced Rum
Cuba Libre
(I rarely have these, but when I feel the need,...)
1. Kirkland's Spiced Rum
