Rum newbie from Montreal

Greetings

I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to the rum scene.
In the past I've never liked rum much because the taste wasn't appealing.

Rewind a couple of months ago my office was re-organized and one day me and a few guys started to talk about alcohol and what we like to drink. When I mentioned my dislike for rum a rum lover told me it's most likely because I had never taste a good rum. I acknowledge that it was most likely the case as I had no idea what a good rum was. He suggested a bottle of Appleton Estate 12yo. For 33.25 I didn't have much to lose.

The same night I went to the SAQ and bought a bottle and a bottle of Coke (i usually drink only Coke Zero). Well I can say that I enjoyed a rum & coke for the first time. I've tried multiple coke/rum ratio and also tried with Coke Zero. I particularly enjoy a small glass of ice cold coke zero with a light touch of Appleton.

Since then I've been on a rum hunt

So far in my very small collection I have:
Appleton Estate 12yo - Love it mixed with Coke Zero
Havana Club Barrel Proof (bought a second bottle today just in case I can't get my hands on one when I run out) - Love it straight and mixed with Coke
Santa Teresa 1796 - Love it straight only
Dos Maderas PX - Had my first taste tonight, I'm not sure yet
Flor de Cana 12yo *empty* - Liked it straight but my roomate liked it more then I did

I also had the chance to enjoy a few sips of Brugal Siglo de Oro, a little strong for my taste but if I had the chance to get a bottle, I'd be all over it.

Yoiu seem to heading the right direction with your rum choices. I might suggest you find a nice, non-sweet rum; and then drop the coke but keep the ice.
You are going to learn more about rum here than you will probably ever want to know .. but it sure is interesting.

Feels good seeing the Quebec contingent grow !

Be patient with Dos Maderas, it's a real treat. You made some very good choices and picked up almost everything SAQ has best to offer. You can't go wrong with El Dorado, that should be your next bottle.

dreliason: When I get rid of the Coke I get rid of the ice as well. I'm not a fan of the watered down taste and most of my rum sipping w/ the exception of the Appleton was done without Coke.

Ben: I've tried to get my hands on a bottle of El Dorado 21yo but the Signature online stock was wrong... I'm waiting for them to get another bottle. If they don't get one by the time I'll go to my parents place in Gatineau I'll drop by a LCBO.

Actually I never tried ED21. You could start with ED12 or ED15, very easy choices to recommend and easier to find.

There's a SAQ not far from my place who carries the ED15 but when I can go there it's outside the opening hours

Anyways I took a walk to the Signature today and picked up a bottle of Appleton 21yo... can't wait to get home and have a taste

Give us your thoughts on Appleton 21; specially since you can compare to other Appletons. I find SAQ sells it a bit expensive at $150.50 and it's been almost 10 years that I did not try it... Just got to Signature today and they finally have the Appleton Master Blender back... this one sells around 90$.

They had the MBL when I bought the 21yo, i went back a few days later to get it as well

The 21yo is smoother than the 12yo but not as smooth as the MBL IMO.

If they still have the MBL next week i'll get a second bottle as a spare.


And today I also picked up a bottle of El Dorado 15yo.
