What are your Top 3 Mixing Rums?
I enjoy learning, and won't ever stop. Not merely from curiosity to learn, I also ask to see what people like best. How often do I say, or even tell myself "That's one of my favorite rums." I'm asking myself this question too. And I wanted to throw all the sipping rums out of this question - just mixers.
Here are mine.
Lemon Hart 151
Mount Gay Eclipse
Flor de Cana 7

Well, I'll put this in terms of "Light, Dark and Spiced" rums that I use for mixing.
Light - Cruzan Light Rum. I love the sweetness on the palate, and it is very versatile. That and being able to buy a handle for < $20 all make it pretty much my house go-to for making any cocktail with white rum as a component.
Dark - ....Hmmm. I'd have to say as of right now, Grand Reserva Zaya. I originally bought it as a sipper and I find it at best mediocre at that. However it really seems to shine when a cocktail calls for a dark rum in it. Appleton 12 y.o. is also quite excellent to my palate, but I've been more leaning towards it as a sipper as of late. And of course on a budget Cruzan Aged Rum settles in a pinch.
Spiced - Hands down Sailor Jerry's. It is versatile and cheap, as a good spiced rum should be. Whenever I get an opportunity to use a flask somewhere I always fill it with the SJ as you can add it to pretty much every juice/soda based drink and improve it. I have a particular fondness for it in ginger ale though.
I don't find myself using overproof rums very often, and while Mount Gay is very good (I love it mixed 1:2 with some coconut water in the summer) I don't buy/use either of them enough for them to really qualify as "favorites". Never bought Flor de Cana 7 but I might consider it when I run down my Zaya.

Myers Dark
Clarkes Court Spicy
Appleton 12 Years (if only it was less expensive!)
I need to try more spiced rums, I will try to get a Sailor Jerrys soon.
Lemon Hart is also on my list!

When it comes to light rum, I use Plantino Matusalem.
Myers mostly for the heavy/dark rum though sometimes Maui.
Traditional rum, i stick with Smith and Cross.
Overproof W&N or Lemon Hart, depending on the mixed drink being made.

Anything overproof I guess. I don't like to mix much. I've got some vanilla flavoured crap that I'm going to try in a chocolate cake sometime. I can't drink it. Hate to waste it.

Having had a bottle of Lemon Hart 151 to hand for the last week, I can see why it is mentioned in this post so often. It is an excellent overproof rum!
Overproof W&N is now going onto my list.

I tend to have variations of the same style of rums in stock & I switch around between them til I've found my favourite.
I make tiki drinks so require lots of different rums & a substitution can make a difference, therefore, picking 3 mixing rums is a tough call...
I'll go for my Navy Grog combo ~ Appleton 8, El Dorado 8 & Bacardi 8.
Great rums!

Bacardi 8 would have to be my favourite general mixing rum- anyone who hasn't tried it on account of the 'Bacardi' name should put aside their pride and give it a chance!
Captain Morgan spiced is tasty and cheap, though if I'm not going out I'd probably rather a Sailor Jerrys.

Right now I'm alternating between Bacardi Oakheart and Bacardi Solera, though Sailor Jerrys and Appleton V/X are pretty popular in my house as well....
