A few months ago I also saw an old Pyrat XO collecting dust on a small liquor store shelf in a strip mall just outside of Chicago.

I'd like to think I just have good luck... as opposed to too much time spent in liquor stores

Major find today - I almost created a new thread, but decided against it.

While dust hunting during my lunch break, I stumbled upon a store with inbetween 20-30 boxes/bottles of the Planters version. Ive never seen that many of them in one place. Im going to return and buy one bottle, and compare the number and quality side by side with the two I have at home.

If its similar, I just may have to take a hit and stock up on it. I dont know about you guys, but the original I tasted is amazing in my opinion. The changing of the recipe by Patron is probably the worst rum tragedy I know of.

I saw this rum today with the serial number in the 170,000's. Though it was a bottle distributed by Patron, I put it next to a bottle numbered in the 1,900,000's and the bottle was noticeably darker. I took a picture, but it didn't come out very noticeable in the pic; however, there was a definite darker tone to the bottle in the 170,000's. Could this suggest that Patron didn't initially change the recipe until they found they could replace some ingredients to make it cheaper?

Oh and needless to say, I bought the older rum

Update: Hope I get to try the old stuff, because the bottle I bought was still superb. Anyone know where I can get the whole package with wooden box that it comes with?

The wooden box is typically associated with the Cask 23. If you can still find it the price in the past was around $200-$250. Could be more or less depending on region. The current version of this is also sold in a (now dark) wooden box and is labeled Cask 1923.

There has been some special holiday packaging made with the Pyrat XO and a wooden box, but I have only seen it with the current XO. If you can find the original XO, I would buy it regardless of packaging. It all looks good in the glass!!

Gotcha, so it was the holiday packaging that I was looking at. Thanks for the help . Any idea if those are still available anywhere?

I think it was Dec. 2010. Maybe on eBay, but I think most stores unloaded it. Takes up room.

there are still some stores around me that have the wooden boxed XO, but it is in the 1 million number bottling. If you're interested PM me and maybe I can get some your way

Well if anyone does come across the holiday packaging near the Philadelphia area, a PM of the location would be greatly appreciated
