Default 151 proof rum for Zombies - Lemon Hart, etc.

A couple of questions as I learn to mix tiki drinks, and particularly the various Zombie recipies:

Is there still no substitute for Lemon Hart Demerara 151? Does it still taste the same as the old version?

I tried some of the new stuff for the first time today, and I like it a lot. Very strong molasses flavor to me, dark and warm.

I also have a bottle of the red label El Dorado 151, and I was surprised to see that mentioned as a second choice in a pinch. It's not bad, but the phrase 'vanilla rocket fuel' does come to mind. Totally different from anything else. To my taste, I'm surprised it's not considered a spiced rum, the vanilla flavor is so strong.

Anyone have any other recommendations for high proof rums for cocktails? The Lemon Hart is a mail order only item for me.

Smith & Cross is 57% ABV.
Goslings makes a 151.
Cruzan has a 151.
Stroh 160 proof.

Of the above, I've only tasted the S&C (and Lemon Hart.)
As you say, the LH tastes more "molassesy" but the S&C
seems more "fruity" and might not be a good substitute
in your cocktail.

Thanks! I know I can get Goslings and Cruzan locally, so I should check them out.

I am also going to give the Plantation Original Dark Overproof Rum a look. It seems very well reviewed.

My original response you to might still be tied up in moderation, but in any case, thanks! I can get Goslings and Cruzan locally.

If anyone was still curious about the old/new label difference in the Lemon Hart 151, of course it was discussed at length last year, and the short answer is 'don't worry, there's no substantial difference'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdeqyOXaE6c

Hi Grozeb, the answer to both of your questions is absloutely yes.

There is still no substitute for LH151 and they have done a good job keeping it the same - I have had a tasting with 2 side-by-side old and new bottles both freshly opened.

Ed is onto a good thing and knows we will all come after him with torches and pitchforks if we lose the magnificent beast that is LH151....

Thanks LM! I have been digging through the threads here and at Tikiroom, while referring to Beachbum Remixed. I finally did mix up a Mid Centry/Dr. Cocktail Zombie, and it was great. Definitely a keeper. Now, if I can get some decent curacao, I'll have my first real Mai Tai.
