Default new shopping trip

Just picked up some new rums to round out my collection.

Anything I should know about these before giving them a whirl?

Matuselem Gran reserve
Cruzan Black strap navy rum
Rum Jumbie Liquer

and last but definitely not least...

A bottle of cachaca
Now I might have this spelling wrong, as its in script and hard to make out the letters...

Aquardente de cana
Ypioca
Aged 2 years
This presents in a dark bottle wrapped in wicker like material.
Here is a blurb from the back of the label...

"family operated since 1846. Ypioca is distilled from pure sugar cane juice and aged in wood barrels, aquiring unique taste and bouquet . Ypioca is the only large distiller with 100% of its Cachaca produced from their own estate."

I have also made my first batch of simple syrup using demerara cane sugar crystals. It came out golden brown in color, is this correct?

I found the cachaca stash @ my favorite liquor establishment, they are hiding it with the cognac and brandies

They had Leblon, which I hear is one of the bigger brands. Considering I tend to keep away from mass market stuff, I gave this ypioca a shot to see how it is....

You should know that that bottle of Matusalem is excellent and likely won't last you very long.

I find the Matuselem Gran reserve a wonderful rum to pour 2 fingers worth of and get it a little warm, just a little past room temp and enjoy sipping on it watching tv getting cozy.

The judges in the 2007 Rum tasting competition in Ybor City were blown away by Ypioca 160, a special aged cachaзa that celebrates the 160th anniversary of the company in 2006. I've never tasted a better cachaзa.

Is that the stuff that tastes like maple syrup, but only better?

no, not like maple. it has all the qualities of a good cachaзa, but is uncommonly smooth on the finish when tasted neat. This is the only cachaзa I've tasted that did not have a decent bite on the end.

The ypioca I have is their "regular" stuff, and aged only 2 years. I would assume then, that this has the qualities of a decent, regular cachaca?

The Matusalem is excellent, and the Blackstrap is a big syrupy rum. Both will give you an interesting tasting.
By the way, I know you are here in the Orlando area also. If there is anything specific you want to find, let me know.
There is a store called Josephs on Sand Lake that has a great selection.
I may be hosting a tasting there in the late spring.
