So I mix, but rarely. I prefer to sip mine, but once in awhile a rum Cuba Libre does the trick...

I started out primarily mixing rums. I used to vacation in St. Bart's in the 80s with my family and got started on ti punches, home-brewed punches, and (so-called) mai tais (at hotel bars).

At the same time I was going to school in NYC and Trader Vic's was still open at the Plaza Hotel, so I developed a love of Tiki drinks. Of course things got better when Beachbum Berry started publishing...

It was only in the last five years or so that I discovered the joys of sipping fine rums. I consider El Dorado 12 a good example of an entry level sipper.

Since then, my budget has slipped (skyward) into the more exotic. The Samaroli Demeraras are my current favorites.

Of course there's lots more too numerous to mention...
Rum will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no rum!

I'm generally of the same mind (although I generally only use a squeeze of lime in my Cuba Libres). The only exception is white rum, which I never sip on its own and almost exclusively use in mojitos, and Sailor Jerry's, which is too spicy for me to sip straight (but makes a fantastic rum and cola).

It sounds a bit strange ,but i have only mixed once
and i didn,t like it.
a good rum have been aged several jears and is made with attention en good care. That,s a shame to put in a coke.
And since then i ALWAYS drink it neat.

I agree - it depends on the spirit & the drinker.

I try everything neat first & can usually tell how I would classify it (sipper or mixer). My collection is 1/5th sippers, 4/5ths mixers.

For me a sipping rum should be drank near to how it is out of the bottle (although I usually add a little water). I allow myself to add a drop of bitters to Angostura 1919 but still count it as a sipper!

Sippers tend to be more expensive, I definitely view the purchase of a new sipper as a treat

I find the whole idea that spirits should only be taken neat to be very snobbish. I think you should drink things how you enjoy them.

People who turn their noses up at people drinking rum and coke really should get out more!

If I buy a bottle of rum it is my gift as to how I enjoy it!

I will mix rums good and great. I will sip on the great ones neat as well. Remember your cocktail is only as good as the base spirit(s).

I prefer to sip. Ice cubes not permitted, either. I know that a range of rums are "designed" to be mixed and connoisseurs rate them terrible when tasted straight, but even those i used to sip (like Morgan's Original Spiced).

I am the complete opposite of your average rum lover. Not only i love spiced ones, but i even take them without mixing. To be perfectly honest though, i am sometimes tempted to try some mixes with ginger beer or root beer (those are hard to come by in my locale, though).
