The best way to start a barrel o' rum at home

Hello everyone, I am captain Blondebeard, a new register at this forum. I wanted to start a thread in order to ask what is the best way to start a barrel of rum at home, as no pirate is good without a good ol' barrel o' rum. This is a very general question, as I have done some research and there seems to be many ways I could go about it. The best seems to be getting my own plastic rain-catcher and filling it up myself, but I am open to whatever ideas anyone else may have. I live in Canada, so if anyone had info on how to order a barrel from somewhere I would be happy to know it. As well, I was wondering how to keep the taste of the rum good while doing the aforementioned process with the plastic rain-catcher. The barrel needn't be too big, but the bigger the better right?

This way you won't die from all the chemicals leaching out of that plastic rain barrel...looks a hell of a lot nicer too.
