Pyrat Cask 23
My dear friends, just how good is this rum? There is one bottle for sale here in Orlando for....are you ready.......$279!:eek::eek::eek:
This is one I have never tasted, and I have been to Anguilla twice in the last two years. During my trips it was not available behind any of the bars where I was. I remember being able to purchase one for around $240. I was on an agricole hunt, so I did not have any room left in the suitcases after St. Barth's, and thought maybe the price point was too high. I can't wait to hear everyone's opinions on this rum and price.

As I've said to a few others before, "It's Worth It. Once."
Get it for Xmas, hit a lottery ticket, find a Benjamin in a coat you haven't worn in 10 years... Then yes, it is most certainly worth it.

If you want to buy it, here is one way to justify it:
There are 17 1.5 oz. servings in a 750 ml bottle of rum. If a bottle costs $279 that is about $16 per serving.
A bottle of wine contains 5 5 oz. servings. At the same cost per serving, a bottle would cost $80. For this price, you can get an above average California chardonnay, cab sauv, or pinot noir.
But go into a liquor store and try to buy a world class bottle of wine for $80. They will laugh at you.
Go buy the Pyrat now.

Hank, this would be one worth buying at mailorder. Hi Times has it for $205. They are reliable. I should add, I've never tried it myself but I'm not a huge fan of XO, so despite the incredible raves, it's not as compeling for me.

I agree with Scott. It's a fantastic rum, but it's a luxury that doesn't need to be kept in your collection at all times. Get some when times are good, but don't fret when times aren't so high.

Thank you, my friends. I still have not made my decision, but it seems it might be cheaper elsewhere if I could find it.
Lew, Hi times will not ship to Florida. I would buy it at the 205 if I could.

Hank, when you start having rum tastings and gathering a small group of enthusiasts, purchase a bottle among 10 friends and enjoy that bottle one fine evening for $28 each.

hmmm
whether it is worth it is your decision. the taste is basically like a much less orange-inflected Pyrat XO. It's good, there's no doubt about it.
I suppose you could thin Pyrat XO about 50-50 or 40-60 with another dark rum of medium sweetness (maybe Apple V/X, maybe Angostura 1919??) to approximate the taste and make a decision.
I do not regret the $196 I spent to acquire it (Canal's on Rt 38 in NJ)...I believe they have one bottle left, if you're looking. Bragging rights went into my decision. It shows friends you appreciate them when you serve it to them.
With the current trend of the dollar, I don't see the price coming down any time soon.

Hi All - I'm new here and been reading all the great information and decided it was time to join in.
Hank - I noticed you are in Orlando as well and I picked up some Cask 23 at Wally's Liquors on Mills Ave for $220. They had to order it and had it in a day.
