Cheapest spicing rum possible

I want to try making my own spiced rum, and I'm wondering what the cheapest base I can get away with is. I know when you're making spiced rum you don't need the highest quality since the spices will mask the rum's flavor, but how far does that go?

Can I use a $13/L bottle of Captain Morgan white, or a $15/L bottle of Bacardi? Can I go even lower with $7/L bottles of Prestige? Or should I be aiming for the cheaper side of things I'd normally use in mixed drinks, around $25-35/L?
