Default Caribbean Cruise- What to Bring Back?

Hello - I will be going on a cruise and the ports of calls will be San Juan-PR, St. Thomas and Haiti. I would love to bring back a few bottles of good sipping rum. Honestly, I am a novice and any suggestions/advise would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hello, welcome!

In Feb I went on a family vaction cruise as well with several of the same ports... In PR, see if you can get a tour of the Bacardi distillery (see another thread here about rum tour of the carribean) it was quite interesting, even though their rums aren't...!

St Thomas is the place to get your rums (even the PR rums are cheaper in ST then in PR!) Depending on where you dock (or how ambitious your are...) will allow you to find some good deals - If you dock at Havensight, check out the Kmart and Pueblo stores right there - best prices on the island, but selection was a bit limited when I was there. If you dock at Crown Bay, there is a Supreme liquor and another Pueblo right there. Either way, you'll probably make it into town and AH Riise has a huge selection of rums, although slightly higher prices then above places. Also, each little shop has rum and if you look carefully, sometimes you'll be able to find an amazing deal (probably mis-labeled) on one particular rum.

We went to the Dom Rep on our trip, so i don't know what you'll find in Haiti, but in my experience, get away from the tourist shops and to a local store for the best selection /prices

As far as rums:
Ron del Barrilito 2 and 3 stars from PR are great and unavailable generally in the US (get them in ST, though... cheaper then San Juan!)
ST: get Cruzan rum from St Croix - Estate Diamond 5 year old, etc. In ST I found some amazing deals on Mt Gay Extra Old, Appleton 12yo, Barbancourt 15yo, El Dorado 12 and 15 yo, etc.
In DR, I picked up a bunch of the Bermudez and Barcelo rums not generally available here: the 1812 anniversario, El dorado, Imperial, etc - you may be able to find them, as well as Cubaney, Matusalem, and Barbencourt in Haiti.

One other tip: because you are going to a US terretory (USVI and PR) as well as others, you'll be allowed to bring back 5 liters of alcholic beverage per person as long as one is from a US territory (be sure to get a Barrilito or Cruzan product from PR or USVI!!!)

Between my wife and I, I brought back 10 liters on our trip!

I bought back 17 bottles from Barbados last year - I nearly had to arrange a fork-lift truck to pick me up from Heathrow!

I wonder how many I can get back from JA in a few weeks?

Just use caution... most airlines have a 5L per person max on flammable liquids... they have been known to confiscate overages... just ask Ed about his experiences...! Would be a shame for them to happen to confiscate that Appleton 250 anniversary...

The headline would read

"Man killed in rum stand-off at terminal 4 - police unable to prise bottle of rum from cold, dead hand"

Might I suggest A.H. Riise 6 and 12 year old rums. St Thomas is the only place you can find them, and I hear they are very good.

Where does Riise contract these from? Perhaps Cruzan?

They are made by Cruzan and blended by Riise. I think you have to go to one of their stores to buy it.
