It went from aged 12 years to 12 aged rums... that cant be a positive. I have an old style one and hadn't planned on buying another as it was just OK.

Age statements are being dropped from other spirits as well like bourbon where the demand is out pacing the supply of old whiskey. Either they keep the numbers but eliminate the word age (sneaky)or remove the numbers altogether

The first thing I did when I saw that pic was check my bottle and luckily I have the actual 12 year old one. No plans to drink that or buy any more though.

I think that they should just remove the numbers altogether. The blend of 12 rums might actually be pretty good, but the sneakiness is insulting to the drinker.

Lets be honest the age statement was probably a fraud anyway. The probably dropped it before they got caught. I'm sure the blend of 12 rums is also pretty fraudulent. They just have to toss 12 different casks in a blending vat to say that... nothing special here.

I read something earlier this year about it being "down-graded".

Never had the Guatemalan spirit, and if I ever find a bottle, I probably would save it.

Your link has a nice summary of what happened to Zaya. Although I would say Zacapa 23 and the Guatemalen Zaya were of similar heritage, but distinct profiles. I think it was more of a brand move than flavor issue. Just an opinion, not a fact.

Zaya is terrible. It tastes likes cheap vanilla-flavored rubbing alcohol. It's hollow and has no complexity. Such a shame for such a previously great rum.

Has anyone done a sbs with Zaya from Guatemala to the newer Trinidad? Which is sweeter? I would get a new bottle but don't want to waste my money. Luckily I have some Guatemalan bottles left.
