And a Bottle of Rum
The history of Rum in the New World through 10 Cocktails. Wayne has written for Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times and other publications. A very interesting account of the industry that fueled the American colonies.

Great Book/Ron Zacapa?
This is one of the best books I have read on the topic of our favorite spirit.
The author states at the end of the book that Ron Zacapa 23 is used as the basis for comparison at competitions. Is this true?

Ron Zacapa 23 has earned a very enviable reputation as one of the best rums in the world. Personally, there is no rum that I would like to drink to the exclusion of all others, but I always try to have at least one bottle of Zacapa rum in my locker. But don't overlook some of the other rums from this Guatemalan distiller.

Thank you for recommending this fantastic gem!
I recently had time to read it and loved his writing style, giving the history of not only rum itself but the cocktails of the time periods. Even the rum recommendations at the end were fantastic. I'll have to see if I can find Prichard's soon to taste an American made rum (from his notes, I'm expecting a bourbon-like quality similar to Mount Gay XO).

Wayne sat with me tasting quite of few of my concoctions in the Carousel Bar. Nice guy!
I am now about halfway through "And a Bottle of Rum". Wonderful read!

RE:"And a Bottle of Rum".
Wayne's book is really outstanding. A great read for everyone and a must read for anyone who loves rum. My wife bought it for me for Christmas and after I opened it she read it cover to cover almost without a break. Truly very entertaining and informative. Wayne is a truly gifted writer.
Was great meeting him briefly in New Orleans.
Regards,

You're not as far from the origin of rum as you might think. Sugar cane has been traced to Papua New Guinea and from there to Southeast Asia then westward to the north coast of Africa and Spain.
I'm not the author of A Bottle of Rum, that's Wayne Curtis. I'm working on the next edition of my book and will let you know when it becomes available.
