Flor de Cana 7: sipper or mixer?
I have seen comments that go both ways, but since I almost always prefer to drink my rum neat, I would enjoy reading the comments of those who know this particular spirit. I tried a bottle of the five yr old FdC Black Label, and as a sipper it failed for me, although I like it in egg nog.
I did try the search function, and while I saw many recommendations for this rum, I saw very few comments that specified if it was being mixed. Is there a refined search function that I may not be aware of? I'm sure my answers are out there .....

i'd say a mixer, that you could sip on the rocks if you wanted to.

I mix the FDC 7 on occasion, preferring to have it over ice. If used in a cocktail, it's a full-flavored ingredient. I'd say it's an excellent choice in eggnog.

The 7 year old is good, but I too prefer my rum neat, and for a sipper I would go for the Flor de Cana 12 year old instead - it's a bit thicker, richer.

I agree with Robert, that I would enjoy this with a little ice, but it is also a great mixer. I would prefer the 12 neat or on the rocks, though. This a good rum to try in cocktails that call for the standard brands.

I broke out my bottle and decided to reeducate myself on this rum. On the nose, it's all about alcohol. Underneath, a light candy aroma just barely pokes through. An initial sip reveals less burn than what I thought the nose promised. And, that's a good thing, not harsh at all. FDC7 tastes of coffee and wood. I do not taste too much more beyond that initial impression. Your tongue does receive a peppery numbness, though. The finish is the least sophisticated aspect of this rum. A tad medicinal. Robert and Hank hit the nail on the head. I must say that a few ice cubes allowed me to enjoy this enough to say that I wouldn't shy away from it if offered to me in a bar or at a party.
Now, I had to try the FDC12! I drink this rum frequently. But, I would be a poor reviewer if I did not seize this oppotunity to have some more. Less alcohol on the nose than the FDC7 followed by caramel, plum and banana. The taste of this rum certainly confirms its geneology. FDC12 is the FDC7, but smoother on the tongue with an added layer of flavor. The initial taste of coffee and wood is right there. But, underneath, I detect caramel, plum, and pepper. These rums are a joy, really. Nothing pretentious about FDC's, upfront and good.

Mixer for me, tho I wouldn't rate it unworthy of sipping.

It makes a good mixer in my humble opinion. I would have to go further up the Flor de Cana ladder before I start sipping eg. 12, 15 and 18 year olds.

By the way, this is a good rum for coconut water and a twist of lime.
