I use marbles or smaller bottles, but marbles let you keep the spirit in the same bottle which looks nicer than using different bottles.

Balance oxidation against alcohol heat
Interesting point about the oxidation. Fortunately nothing in my collection worth drinking alone has been open for six months. However I do find that time has been very kind to several rums. I have a Zaya that for the first month was overshadowed by the heat of the alcohol. It's now very smooth and enjoyable!

Your post is very interesting. After opening the bottle some oxidation process takes place. Thanks for sharing this information.

I just recently had a friend give me a bottle of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, it is about 7 years old, and has been opened twice according to him. It still looks normal, and smells normal, should it be safe to drink?

Yes, that should be safe to drink. Stored in a closed bottle, rum should stay more-or-less good indefinitely. Oxidation could change the taste, but wouldn't impact the safety in any way.
The one drawback to that bottle is that, even after 7 years, it's still Captain Morgan

Yes I know, I'm not really a collector, but Rum is my favorite drink. Sadly my favorite that I've had is Sailor Jerrys. I prefer cheapo san juan over Captain.

don,t let your rum oxidate
I only open the next bottle of rum when the other bottle is emtied.
So you can have 10 bottles rum or more but when jou have only 1 open
then there,s no time for the rum to oxidate!

Well! And here I had uncharitable thoughts about the Screech we had at a Newfoundlander's house a while back. I thought he might have a teenager who was using the classic "top-it-up-with-water" trick. I now suspect that he might not drink, and that the bottle may have been sitting in the house for some time. Hmm. Screw top though...
Time to get at that "It cost how much?!" Zacapa before the YLB gives up on me and quits stocking it.
And I'd better see what else I have that has a cork in it.

It wouldn't hurt, especially the nice bottles you have, to use "wine gas."
