I would say that most aged rums follow the same taste profile than their younger counterparts, but are usually more complex and more refined. In the case of Angostura, the 1824 has less vanilla flavor, but it's still there. Since I loathe Vanilla, for me it's still a mixer, but at that price it's better to buy two 1919 than one 1824. Nice bottle though.

Another thing, older rums are not necessary always better than the younger ones. At some point in the aging process it is hard to balance the impact of the cask in the taste. For me it's a matter of relative value. For example the El Dorados, 12 year at 34$ is a very good deal, the 15 years at 57$ is nice too, but the 21 at 96/109$ for me is overpriced, and the 25 years is 319/250 (all prices SAQ/LCBO). In my own humble opinion, the 25 years is not better than the 21 years, the taste of the cask is too much present in the rum for me.

I was talking to a friend about The Lash, and now that is what I'm going to have.

Opened the Virgin Gorda......the jury is out. It's nice enough. Nutty, initially sweet and quite smooth, but I think there are better in the price bracket ....to be continued tomorrow.

Mount Gay 1703 at last, it was not a disappointment!!! A slight harshness at the finish that I didn't turn away but overall the nose, complexity, taste rates a 9 out of 10

Abuelo Anejo to start, and then a bottle I had for a few months but did not open yet: Zafra 21 years. An excellent rum from Panama.

I almost bought that while it was on sale too but some reviews scared me away. Things like too much like orange liqueur - and an unpleasant one and so on... You obviously didn't find that which is encouraging for me... I assume you are sipping it?
