Default Rums of St. Maarten and St. Thomas

It's me again for the third straight year asking for suggestions on rums to get on my cruise. I know Cruzan is close, and I'm sure I'll pick up a bottle - what's their most expensive rum now a days? And what local rums should I be looking for? Of course, any good deals anyone knows about, I'm open to all suggestions!

I'll be heading there March, so keep that in mind.

no local rum in St Marteen, but if you just cross the"border" you'lll find lots of tasty Martinique and Guadeloupe rums.

Are they available in St. Maarten? I ask because I know someone who goes a few times a year and if there's a bottle that someone can recommend, I'll ask him to bring me one back.

Cruzan is not known for high-end expensive premium rums. Their oldest rum is the Single Estate Barrel, which is widely available in the US around 30$.

It's a good mixer to have on the bar and I'm sure I can find it MUCH cheaper over there. Also, some companies have products they don't release here, so I wasn't sure if they did or not.

I saw that one of the excursions available to me goes to Ma DouDou distillery, so I may visit there. Though I don't believe they make any higher end rums either.

Is Old Man Guavaberry 8 year worth trying to snag?

From St. Thomas You could try the A.H. Riise range. Mid November they released in Europe their top end rum called Nonplus Ultra . Limited to 2000 bottles per year and presented in a beautiful bottle this rum is very sweet with intense caramel, orange and vanilla flavours.

Both islands have many rum shops where you will likely find any number of premium rums. You will likely find a good deal on Pusser's 15 yr old and some Cuban rums in the shops. It's a bit of a treasure hunt. A.H. Riise is often recommended, so check it out, too.

In St. Maarten do check out the Guavaberry shop and try a sample of a guavaberry colada. You will then definitely buy a bottle of the guavaberry liqueur to make the drink at home.

On the way back to the cruise ship pier in St. Maarten, you will see a grocery store on the left. There you will find a number of rums, and often a good deal on a premium one, such as El Dorado 21 or Neisson Rhum Réserve Spéciale.

On the pier itself you will find the shop for Rum Jumbie, which comes in a collectible bottle. Their coconut rum also gets good reviews.

By the way, there also used to be a shop on the pier that sold coconut smoothies. If it's still there, you can't leave without having one.

So far, I'm picking up a bottle of Bones Rum, something from Ma Doudou, probably a Cruzan single barrel, and if I can find it, a bottle of the Republic 8yr aged rum made by Guavaberry. I know none of these are that high end, but I love getting a sampling of the locals in addition to the sippers.

I'd like to find some older English Harbor as I brought back a 5yr several years ago and enjoyed it. I forgot to mention I can't really stand rhum agricoles before, so I'll have to skip on those suggestions. I guess as far as the sippers go, I'll have to wing it and see what I find in the stores like A.H. Riise.

Don't forget the Guavaberry Liqueur. I made guavaberry daiquiries over the holidays, and they were a hit.
