Your best line of attack is to taste around until you find your favourite rum profile. Good news is, there's lots out there to try and many varieties.

If what is deemed "good" or "bad" or "must have" or "must avoid" is important to you then reading the various rum blogs is your best bet. The Fat Rum Pirate, Rum Diaries Blog and many others are good starting points. Reddit has a good forum for questions, and a good intro document you can read.

Your own experience and judgement as you gain confidence in your choices is important, so don't buy just because others say you should. Educate yourself and make up your own mind.
