Hello to you all from Denmark. Im new at rum drinking - started with a sip of el dorado 12y about 1/2 a year ago - and i was hooked! Great to find this place - lots of info - and what a wonderfull life you are living there on your boat Edward!!
Since then i've tasted zacapa 15y & 23y, pyrat XO (planter gold - old version), el dorado 15y and the santa teresa 1796 and loving them all (the pyrat I cant really decide on though).
Only problem is the prices here in Denmark... cant believe what u get bottles for over there! the XO fx costs around 700-900dkr in most shops (130-175usd) found one for 499dkr though (97usd). The zacapa 23 cost 550dkr (107usd).
Expensive little hobby i've ventured on here - but i like every sip of it!
Looking forward to expanding my horizon. U experienced guys out there got any suggestions on what to try next?

Welcome to the best rum forum in the world!
The prices in Sweden are no better than Denmark..why don`t you try to buy your rums from Germany online? i buy almost all my rums from either Germany or Italy, and sometimes England and France.
You pay shipping but you get a much better selection and sometimes on EBay you can make real good deals. I once bought a El Dorado 15 from EBay UK for pound 10 incl shipping, and yesterday i bought from Italy EBay a Pampero aniversario for 15 euros.

Is there an age statement on that bottle of Matusalem or is it just a number 15 on the label?

I'm not sure what is available on the liquor store shelves in Denmark so I can't tell you what to try next.

hmmm just seems to be 15 not a direct age statement. Bottle looks like this:

yeah i have read alot of positive things about it... and I love the 1796's taste so I thought I couldnt go totally wrong with their orange liqueur.

Im really getting inspired to try a lot of things while reading this book by Dave Broom. "High-ester rums" is mostly located to jamaica as far as i can understand. If I should try a good "specimen" of high ester rum what brand should I be looking for? Appleton?

I think somebody here will be able to answer your question, i think it has to be a pot stilled and aged rum, maybe something from Appleton and also Long Pond Distillery?
Someone?

Slow fermentation produces higher ester levels, which contribute a full-flavored fruity quality - such as are popular in Jamaica, Guyana and Bermuda rich rums.

Does high ester have to do with proof? i thought it had to do with taste?

I find some of Appleton rums to be relatively low in esters, such as the VX and the 21 year. The Reserve and Extra are good examples of high ester rums. Also, the Wray & Nephew overproof is a good high-ester high-proof rum.

The highest ester Jamaican rums are produced by adding some of the spent yeast from a previous distillation to the fermenting molasses wash, the process is similar to a sour-dough bread recipe.

The fermented wash is then distilled in a pot still and a high-ester distillate is condensed. The highest ester rums are used mostly for blending as it is too heavy to be enough by itself.
