There's about 90 rums on this counter at any one time, another 120 or more in the cabinets and at least 50 or 60 stacked in boxes, behind doors, next to the refrigerator, in the trunk of my car -- or any other place I can find to keep them without getting yelled at by my wife.

That's looking like my boat, except the labels are fresher. I was boarded by customs in Martinique a few years ago and they discovered 87 bottles of rum before they gave up. Since I didn't have any receipts and stuck by my story that this was for research purposes only and I wasn't selling anything they appeared to be a little confused.
Language was an apparent problem, as is often the case in foreign countries. One of the men refused to admit he spoke any English until I showed him a picture from a magazine of the boat and me. Then things loosened up. Over the next few weeks I'd see these customs men at a bar after work and share a ti punch and a few sips of rums they weren't able to taste on Martinique.
Fortunately, they were looking for other contraband and a few cases of rum for personal consumption on board a boat are technically legal, if you've checked and declared Ships Stores in Ballast.

I need to get a new picture of my collection. The current picture on my site is about 8 months old or so, and therefor missing about 20 bottles. ;)

looks kind of like mine, even down to the perpetually nearly empty bottle of Ron zacapa LOL.... I can never keep a full bottle of that around for some reason.....

Ive actually slowed my drinking of Zacapa. Ive had that bottle of Zacapa for over 2 months now.
The neat thing about my collection is the Japanese rums I have. I've got 3 of em. Ive tasted 2 so far. Theres a white called Helios which smelled wonderful. We did a shot of it (big mistake). It had overwhelming flavors of olives. I was burping olives for 20 minutes. Not fun...

Hi all,
I'm new to the boards and would like to thank everyone for the great discussions and information. I love the rum pictures and I can't wait until my collection looks like some of those that have been shared here. My collection is coming along, helped by a couple of recent trips to Belize and Jamaica. Any suggestions for Mexican rums? I'll be there for work in a month or so and would like to bring back more than just tequila.

The ability to travel and collect rum is a great combination - a fine sport, a noble pursuit. You're well on your way to amassing a worldly collection.
There were some discussions on good rums to get in Mexico on other threads here in the forum.
I've tried two that I really like. The Rum Mocambo Art Edition 20 year old product is now available and the Porfidio Single Barrel Anejo Rum with a palm tree in the bottle.
You might try the Bacardi Solera 1873, which I believe is made in Mexico.
You'll also find Flor de Cana rums in Mexico, which are quite nice. You might find some Zacapa if you look in the tourist or duty free areas.
I was in Cancun in 2004 and the rum selection was poor. However I was in Cozumel in 2007 and noticed that the rum selections in the duty free stores have increased and were pretty good. Some examples were Flor de Cana, Botran, Zacapa, El Dorado, D'Aristi...so I think the duty free stores will be your best bet.

What your collection lacks in quantity, it thrives in quality. Very impressive, I am envious!
As for a mexican rum, Ive got the D'Aristi 10 Year, its very delicious! I overpaid for it, ordering online, but Im still very happy. It reminds me of the Abuelo 7 Year, although its no surprise as they are in similar parts of the world, as well as similar land characteristics

Seems to be working so far. I need to be careful; it is only 2 PM in Texas. Not to change the topic too much, but I recently discovered Pimm's No.1 and the Pimm's punch (Pimm's and sparkling lemonade (I use fresh lemons, seltzer water, and simple syrup)).
The story I was told is one of the reasons for the punch's popularity is the relatively low alcohol level, which allows for the punch to be consumed all afternoon without causing one to fall over drunk but still allowing a person to be "glad at heart." I like the story and it works for me.

Here is a picture of my collection I took one day while "organizing". It takes up a china cabinet that my wife was using. I slowly invaded all the space....at first I had a half a shelf, but as I started adding more rums the china slowly started getting stacked in the lower shelves, until one day it was placed in the cabinet underneath. My rational to my wife was...hey we only use the china a few times a year, but the rum on the other hand is used more often than that

Robert, how long did it take you to amass your collection?
I've been collecting for many years, probably at the rate of three or four bottles each month. In the last two years since I've been doing tasting events every month I've increased the collection by a factor of three or four. Now, I'm acquiring about a dozen or twenty bottles a month, sometimes many more. My tasting events use about 8 to 12 bottles a month.

I have to work hard at finding new rums to add to my collection living in such an isolated small country. Sometimes I go weeks without a new addition, but then I will have other weeks when I acquire several bottles. Travelling around the Caribbean helps and that is usually my first choice for vacations. Begging people to bring a bottle back from their trips works sometimes, but you have to be specific otherwise you get something that will collect dust on your shelf for years (not everybody will pay 40+$ for a bottle of rum!!). A photo of a label usually helps here. I visit all the liquor stores on island on a regular basis looking for new rums or if none are available for re-fills. I even pester the owners to try and bring in new rums when they travel to the D.R., Panama, St.Martin, etc. The first thing I do when I walk in a bar is check out their selection of rum and have often traded a new bottle for something else I can find. There are a couple of photos of my collection on my site with the latest additions on another page:-

The hard work will continue until I run out of space, which could be soon!!

Keep up the good work, Rumelier. If you can join us in New Orleans and London, your collection will grow. And, you should be visiting Miami on a regular basis to take stock from this little corner of the rum world.

Robert, hopefully I will see you next week on my way to St.Kitts, so unfortunately I will miss New Orleans, but hope to go to London.
Cave Rum is still alive right now with another 400 cases in production to arrive shortly. I am not sure what the future holds, as there have been availability issues in the past. We are developing another rum to be called Bambarra. Robin was lucky enough to sample the Reserve on her recent visit to Provo. Cave however, has created a small market share without any real help from us (promotion wise). I think Bambarra will be a success when we finally launch it. Miami for me these days is an inconvenient detour to the Caribbean,(having to go north to go south!!) I only go thru the airport when I have no other choice, but usually pick up a bottle of rum at the Duty Free, just wish they had a better selection. See you next week.

This is a bottle of Mt. Gay's "30 year" blend that was produced for their 300th anniversary. It came in a nice crystal bottle in a lined box.
This particular photo was taken at the Mount Gay distillery in May 2004; I declined to buy the bottle there for some stupid reason (wife!) but happened to stumble across it in Jamaica the following year and purchased it there for $179 USD. Worth every penny.

I came home this afternoon to find my rum collection had been "re-assigned" precious space in our humble abode. The wife was tired of the endless supply of new rums in boxes, behind doors, under tables, next to the 'fridge, balanced precariously on tabletops, etc. I am the new proud owner of a set of steel shelves full of rum, holding at least half of the current collection.

I am the new proud owner of a set of steel shelves full of rum, holding at least half of the current collection.
That looks great. I wish I had used solid steel shelves, as I would still have a great deal more rums. I hope you didn't have to disturb the fish to put this up!! Hoefully next time you come over we can add to the collection. Our Trinny rums should be here soon if these hurricanes give us a break. Sitting home with a cool glass of Bacardi 8 with 80mph winds outside. Had to go and move my boat in the marina before it sank. Just trying to dry out now.eek.gif

Seeing all these impressive photos of shelves stacked full of rum, this got me thinking about storage. Because of a lack of available space elsewhere in the house I keep my rums and other alcohol in a cupboard, where they happen to be shielded away from heat and light. Is this not advisable or does it not make much difference?
Also, my other motivation for keeping them hidden away is so that when I have visitors they don't mistakenly assume I'm a raging alcoholic! The reaction I get from people when I tell them I have a few dozen rums in my house is rarely positive.

From what I've heard and read, keeping your rums "shielded away from heat and light" is a good thing if anything.

The bar I am standing by are the ones I drink the most while the ones on the shelves are the more collectable (harder to find here). The drinkers can be gone in a few weeks, depending on the mood. Obviously the more I collect the longer the rums last. I have almost 500 bottles right now.

Currently working on it Gecko, but man when its done...its gonna be nice. The plan is.....
Convert a small room in the finished basement into a bar area. Fridge, rum barrel for a table. Thinking of doing an elegant Havana Bar theme or going with tacky island theme. Either way the good rum(and beer as well) is gonna be stored in a closet area there with 2 sliding french doors. Inside will be built in book shelves to hold the treasure! Im thinking to do it right it will take me a year to get it done, but that damn closet is going up as fast as I can make it happen. Right now my collection is demoted to being stored in milk crates...which makes it tough to make drinks so I've been sipping a lot more lately.

Hey El Dorado, it seems Wisconsin distributors can't get El Dorado rum for me! Any chance you can pull some strings, call in some favors, or break some rules to get some to the liquor stores here for me to purchase? I hear I need this rum!
Edward Hamilton
11-20-2009, 10:57 AM
El Dorado is working to improve distribution in the US, where there is a lot of interest in the brand. As for breaking rules, no reputable company is going to even think about breaking any rules as that could cost them a lot more than a few cases of rum.
For the moment you'll have to drive to Illinois.
Or, if you're traveling to the western states I understand that El Dorado is going to be more available, more of the product line and more distribution, in a number of western US states.
All good things take time.
malice
11-20-2009, 12:49 PM
I was entirely kidding about breaking the rules. I have a friend that heads down through Illinois every month or so. I will ask him if he can pick some up for me. I look forward to trying some. El Dorado seems to keep coming up as one of those rums that you just have to have around. Thanks Ed!

Dear Robert,
Great shots! You bring up a wonderful discussion that I have had some experience with here at my home. I have the same problem with my wife, Where I can place that new bottle of rum?? When most of the rooms, closets and empty spaces in our house seem to be hidden storage for "my collection". How does a rum lover/collector manage such a dilemma? Shit hit the fan some time back so I discovered an area under our staircase that I developed into my private Rum Conservatory, which didn't get vetoed.
I think this rum storage vs wife issue may need its own column? Interested in how you manage?
Cheers!

There's about 90 rums on this counter at any one time, another 120 or more in the cabinets and at least 50 or 60 stacked in boxes, behind doors, next to the refrigerator, in the trunk of my car -- or any other place I can find to keep them without getting yelled at by my wife.

I don't mean that as disrespect to canada or canadians but it is VERY hard to come by some of those bottles in the great white north and that impresses me. I also saw that bottle of el dorado single barrel...nice catch there.cheers.gif
Hi Ron,
You're right. It's not only the selection, it's the fact that we can't (legally) bring more than 40 oz. for every trip out of Canada.
One have to use a lot of rum mules to get a decent collection.
I go down to Florida every year and I make sure to bring some rum mules like Ben called them. So to them ... thankyou.gif

Until now, I've only opened 2 bottles of the renegades because I do have those twice :) and I own the whole Edition 1 and 2. So I want to keep them closed until I'm sure I don't need to worry about money. Maybe they gonna be much more worth than now in a few years, so let's see what happens after I graduated. Hopefully I don't need to give a damn about money then.
I like both of them so far with the Jamaican 2000 very very smoky and pretty different from any other rum I ever tasted but I somehow like it. The Grenada 1996 is just awesome, so so smooth, tasty but also very different. You love it or hate it.
Hm, now you bring the Rum Nation Panama 18 up, wanna have a quick rum-chat on that now? I'm curious if it's really that disappointing.
Drinking it atm and hmm.. yeah somehow it can't keep up with the Plantation Panama 1997 at all :( Glad I didn't pay too much on the Rum Nation... but it's not particulary bad, just not that awesome (and tastes a bit watery) and complex, gives me a lot of dark chocolate and then cranberry aswell as vanilla.

Amazingly , and this shows the sheer variety of rums, I have only three bottles in common with you (Hc 7y, Flor de cana 4y dry & black seal) in my small collection of 25 odd...
There's a few on my wishlist (Diplomatico, Eldorado, Cruzan) and also some I 'm not tempted by(...hush...!). I also notice that you don't have many agricole. Is it by taste or difficulty to reach them?
malice
03-18-2011, 11:01 AM
Mostly because of taste. I will typically only pick up agricoles to use in cocktails. The Clement VSOP I use in Mai Tais and I have used Barbancourt in punches. I just don't find myself craving an agricole for sipping, but perhaps that is just because I haven't had the right agricole yet...
