I personally love this rum! Its complexity is well beyond its years, its very smooth with a long finish. Now is it worth the bucks? It all depends. Its hard to say if any rum is worth THAT much, itd have to have the cure for cancer in it.
If money is not an object, dont hesitate and buy it! If you plan to not open it and save it, do it, you could probably make some big bucks some years up the road.
But, if you are expecting some cosmic difference in tricentennial compared to other rums, it wont be there. Rums can only taste so perfect, which this one does. But honestly, I like Angostura 1824 and Ron del Barrilito 3 Star better, and theyre much cheaper.
That price is steep...I have a bottle that I bought in Jamaica for $200 USD. Currently I just have it as a collector item but if I stare at it long enough, my willpower will weaken and it will get cracked.....
I don't suppose you share what stores they are at?

My local Mount Gay rep stopped by to bring some product for a recent tasting and proudly showed me his only bottle of the Tricentennial. I insisted we needed it for the tasting event, but that did not sway him. I offered bribes to no avail. Finally I told him he better leave quickly or I'd have no choice but to hit him over the head and take the bottle. He was gone in a flash.

I tasted this rum a couple of years back, as a friend opened one at a special event. It was amazing, very complex. It is only worth the money if you save it for a very special occasion, then drink it with friends. The only good rum bottle is an empty one.:pparty2.gif

Could buy 4-5 Pyrat Cask 23 bottles for that dough. Spread out the goodness a while.

a bit off topic... but since we are talking expensive alcohol, I was invited to a dinner the first week in February and someone at the table insisted on getting two shots of Louis XIII Cognac. This stuff sells for around $1800 - $1900 for a 750ML bottle and people will pay up to $300 for the empty crystal bottle.
In my world - this is insanity. I think the shots in the restaurant were about $150 a pop.
The guy let me have two sips off it. I'd have a hard time telling good wine from bad wine, let alone cognacs probably. All I can say is, it was good. And it left your mouth "entertained" for several minutes after it was down the gullet.
Worth $1800 a bottle or $150 a shot??? I guess if you are extremely wealthy, or an athlete with a lot of money to blow on frivolous stuff, this would be the ticket.

500 krakens is a bit excessive for this bottle, I've seen it around a lot cheaper. Having tasted this I can say it is excellent though.
re the Mt Gay...I checked out the Ebay U.K. site and bidding is up to 300 plus GBP (approx 600 CDN)....
I would love to have it but it'll have to wait until I win the Lotto 649 this Saturday!!!!!..:D

Or maybe one is just curious enough to gather together a group of lets say, 15 to 20 spirit "bums" who are willing to toss into the pot and purchase a bottle and then share it at an event.
While when stocking the locker value is an issue, when it comes to tasting and evaluating, a spirit's value is left behind in my mind and palate.
Granted, a tasting of a high end spirit amongst friends who have paid may lead to some prejudice in the outcome.
I would not pass up the chance though.

Very nicely put, Rum Runner. Every year, I notice that my adventurous side indulges itself with exploits more cerebral than physical. And, tasting something new is always an experience which calls upon my body and my brain. I've learned never to pass up the chance to trade some money for something new, especially when it involves friends, good cheer, and spirits. If one can afford it, Rum Runner's tip can lead to a really good time that hangs around in one's memory for quite a long time. glass.gif
