I too have been looking into Orgeat syrups for rum drinks. My question is when picking an orgeat syrup, do you consider what type of rum you will drinking?

For example, I seen some lime and lemon flavoured syrup which sounds good with white/blanc rums. Almond flavoured sounds good with aged/anejo rums.

I think you can use orgeat with all rums.

Here is a link to some drinks that uses orgeat:

So its not really a matter of trying to pair up the rum and orgeat; its just a matter of what drink you are mixing?

What exactly is orgeat syrup? What is a good brand name? What specific rum cocktails use the syrup?

Many classic drinks use orgeat syrup as a component of the drink. It is most famous for contributing to the original Mai Tai but it can be found in many other classics including the Scorpion and the traditional French drink called the Momisette.
Orgeat, sometimes called "French Orgeat", is simply made from almonds, sugar and rose water/orange-flower water. It was, however, originally made with a barley-almond blend.

Orgeat has a pronounced almond taste and is used to flavor many cocktails.

A good brand name in my opinion is Monin.

Here is another link to drinks using Orgeat, there are some rum based drinks there as well as other drinks:

Theres a link floating somewhere on this forum about how to pair the proper rums for a mai tai. Im sure the same can be said about orgeat. Take your bottle of orgeat and take a bottle of rum, but each bottle up to each nostril and inhale. Try it with different rums, and find which pairing worked the best.

Adam, you have just invented a new and entertaining way to serve Mai Tais for your guests :D

Along with your "famous crushed ice method" its a nice pairing.. you cannot go wrong..

I suppose the word nostril wasn't too appealing. I guess I could have said "nose"... Now Ive got visions of walking around with two bottles up my nose, haha!!

In flavor, orgeat is obviously quite similar to just "Almond Syrup", but while Almond Syrup is normally clear, Orgeat is normally cloudy.
