It occured to me, that I have begun to think everybody here's profession is "Rum Drinker".
What is everybodys job?

Some say I am a poor but honest feed salesman. Others insist I am a pathological liar. Perhaps I have trouble defining what I do.
Publishing... marketing... promoting... wrestling nude on cold marble floors by torchlight... I have a PhD in BS from Psychotic State.

Well..not bad Burr..;)
I used to cook until my poor back didn`t want to cooperate anymore, then i worked with plants and flowers for a while until i damaged my foot and then abandoned "standing up all day" jobs and went into office work..
Now i do customer service and computer work and a little bit of this and a little bit of that, paired with living on this board.

My 2 real jobs as swordsmith and rum maker both involve tinkering in material science research and development.
I'd like to say 'kept husband' but thats a bit of a fib. I'm in law enforcement.

I've been a pauper, a poet, a pirate, a pawn and a king..........
Ok, enough Sinatra.
I have been a massage therapist for about 18 years, specializing in deep tissue and medical bodywork. I have recently added professional skincare to my buisiness. I have a private practice that I share with another skin care professional, called Island Dreams Skincare and Massage. Does the name surprise anyone? Our website is being built as a write this, you can find it at islanddreamsskincare.net.

22 years doing odd jobs with computers, starting from selling & maintaining PCs and currently working on a humongous multi-application security device that runs firewall, IPS, A/V, etc. Overall, I'm sort of a generalist in Internet security applications and devices.

Assistant Professor of American History at a German university. It's pathetic, but I've spent my entire professional life in the groves of academe, except for the usual mid-20s stints as freelance translator, English teacher, lyricist and such. If anyone here is into Thrash Metal, I wrote a number of lyrics for TANKARD way back when, a reputed band in the genre :D.

I've worked in the hotel business since 1995. I dream about buying a sailboat and sip good rum all day in the carabeanbut much to my surprise I find myself back at work every day. Darn!
I've spent the past 5 years working for a city, writing software for police/fire departments and their associated dispatch centers.
Prior to that I spent 5 years working for Macromedia (now Adobe) doing sales engineering - which basically meant coming home once a week to do laundry and repack my suitcase.
Dood Fun Fact: My wife ALSO writes software.

Now there is a match made in heaven! Dood and his wife share the same type of employ, and she likes rum too!!
What are my chances of finding a rum drinking, cigar smoking massage therapist?
And I can't help but wonder if Sue Sea works with Jimbo.........LOL

I wonder if it would necessarily be a good thing to find someone who shares all of my vices, it could be mutually destructive!!! I suspect I could very soon go down in a flaming orgy of rum and good times....:) mmmmmmmmm
My missus is outside the industry and keeps me in check when I get too 'drinks geeky' - as she calls it.
That's the difference between having rum as a passion, like everyone here, and having booze as a full-time profession. It can take over your life. Not that that's often a bad thing....

My wife hates the smell of rum, whenever I sip on one, she makes me keep it far from her. Then I gotta brush my teeth before bed! (That is unless she sleeps on the opposite side of the bed)
I need to send her in for a rum upgrade. Whenever we go to rum events... she drinks wine. grrr... :)

My wife Robin (yes... Rob & Robin) and I have always worked together, mostly from our home office, running a number of interesting and creative businesses over the years. We've managed to evolve together since meeting in high school and going to the prom together in 1973. When we published our magazine about scuba diving back in the 1980s, she was less enthusiastic than me about collecting rums everywhere we went, but has since developed her own list of favorites. Our son Robert shares many of our interests including scuba diving, rum, tropical islands, computer systems, photography, writing, fine food and wine, adventure travel, community service and history.

Architect, now semi-retired. I do not take on whole projects anymore, but instead provide consulting services to other architects in the area.
More time for family, travel, and rum.

I have been in the software business for many years, creating a bulk mail application. Also have a web and graphic design business. Either way, I am in front of a computer most of the time here at my home office so its easy to take a break once in awhile to see what up in the cigar - and now rum world. Could never have imagined.....

Welcome to the "sitting in front of the computer all day "avoiding work" at other web sites" Club! :D
While my wife does appreciate good rum, she's really more of a "flavored spirit" enthusiast. She loves making "girlie drinks"...usually of the frozen kind with some flavored spirit and a menagerie of liqueurs.
Which reminds me...I need to get the recipe for the Peter Pan out of her...
Oh, and while she seems to appreciate my growing collection of rums, I think that's at least partially to assuage her guilt over her collection:

That picture is 18 months old...the empty space is now filled with various containers of recently inventoried My Little Ponies (1206 I think was the most recent count).

I can surely see that you can safely go ahead collecting more rums..

Re the "empty space" that is now covered with boxes: Where is there an empty space in that picture?! I envy your setup; there is no way your wife can complain about your rum collection. Do you guys collect anything else?

The floor areas where you can see carpet, while few and far between in the photo, have been filled.
As for other collections, we generally bring back paintings by local artists when we travel abroad. We're also big theater people, so we have a collection of autographed playbills, posters, tickets, etc.

I collect rum..yes you aleady knew..:) I also collect pareos,Tahitian black pearls, Monoi oils, orchids, shells and stones, sugar sticks from cafès, and nice glasses and swizzle sticks for my bar. But i`m much more moderate in my collecting than say....Doods wife...:D
In my wife's defense, she has been collecting since age 3.
Of course, when we met almost 7 years ago, I think she had 400 ponies, and has tripled that number since.

How did she tell you about her collection? Was there a third date when she was like "I have a confession to make... Do you remember My Little Ponies?"

I collect rum and single malts (and pure potstill whiskies) but I don't think of myself as a collector - I'm just behind drinking it! My wife collects shoes and handbags. She justifies her collection by refering to my rum & whisky bottles. I fear she suffer from the Imelda Marcos syndrome.........
Tiare - Tahitian black pearls sounds expensive?
Dood, great picture and thanks for sharing! That picture says more than a thousand.......ponies ;)
Dood,

To be honest I don't really remember. When we met, most of her collection was still at her parents' house, so she just had 10 or 20 at her apartment and I think casually mentioned that she had more back home.
I had no idea what I was getting in to.
I have only one rule regarding her collection: No plastic equestrian statues in the bedroom. ;)

I see a future compromise here......when every nook and cranny is filled with rum bottles it's time to bend the rules a little :)

Ah, but I have an advantage...if space starts to run low, I can just drink more of the rum. :)

Mr Fjeld, the pearls can be more or less expensive depending on where you buy them, how often and in what quality, i never buy the highest Q pearls..:)
