View Full Version : Coke vs. Pepsi?

I have been a cola drinker since forever.

About 10 years ago I switched to diet cola 'cause it was preferable to buying bigger pants.

Rum and cola remains my drink of choice when I'm not sampling the good stuff neat. I have gotten to the point where I do not even like the taste of cola unless there is a little rum splashed in it.

So my question is, whate's everyone's favorite cola, and their favorite rums for adding to it?

Mine is Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi, with Mount Gay Eclipse, Cruzan Estate Diamond, or Appleton V/X. I like to rotate the rums to keep the taste interesting. A twist of lime is also good.

Diet Coke is my cola of choice. All coke products ring superior to me.

Gimme a Sailor and Diet any day!

For me its the original Coke and if i drink Coke i drink Coke only and with ice and some lime but never with rum..just donґt like rum with coke.
I rather drink no Coke at all if i want to diet rather than drink a diet Coke which i think taste artificial..well, thatґs for me.

I won't drink cola any more if I can avoid it. Since I love carbonation and prefer diet soda, I always had to deal with Diet Coke/Pepsi at restaurants and bars though, which really sucked. I want my Diet Sprite thank you. No luck, ever.

Then, one day while mixing a quick cocktail which required some seltzer, it hit me. Seltzer. Every restaurant (practically) has a bar, so I could always get a seltzer or soda water and enjoy my beloved carbonation untainted by cola.

I ain't too bright some times. It took me *years* to realize this.

So now the only time I'll have cola is a Rum & Coke (etc). My preference is Ron Matusaelm Gran Reserva.

I'd like a megaburger, a double cheeseburger and extra large french fries with extra mayo and a diet coke please. No thanks, I hate all diet products. They simply have no flavour despite what the Coke Zero ads say. Maximum taste? Maximum fail!

Having said that I prefer Coca-Cola because I dont like the softer and artificial tasting Pepsi. Not that Coke is unartificial...

Here is another vote for Coke, but I'll go one step further and say I prefer the cane syrup variety. You can usually find this with the Mexican foods in the old school glass bottles.

I`m thinking of trying to find that Mexican coke to compare to the other one. Its just very hard to find Mexican stuff here.

I used to drink a lot of non-diet sodas. That contributed greatly to my rotund physique.

I still drink a lot of sodas...mostly Cherry Coke Zero.

With rum it depends on the rum. Stronger rums can stand up to the more peppery Coke Zeros, drier rums go well with Diet Pepsi because it is - to my taste buds - sweeter than the Coke offerings.

This post reminds me of a canned beverage I had in the bahamas. It was a canned Cuba Libre. rum and cola in a can. I remember two things about it: a big red star on a white can, and that it was awful!

Bundaberg in Australia has long sold rum and cola in a bottle; The extremely popular Bundy & Cola Draught is also available right from the tap in many bars.

Incidentally, they're celebrating the 200th anniversary now of their rum rebellion of 1808, which likely had little to do with rum. William Bligh, after suffering the indignation of a mutiny on his Bounty, was summarily overthrown as Governor of New South Wales as a result of his hard-hearted reputation.

It's a great excuse to raise one against imperial tyranny, mate.

I'll raise one FOR Imperial tyranny. The worlds just not the same as when we ruled the waves, it's all been downhill........

And I'll vote for the real deal Coke in an ice cold contoured glass bottle with a shot of room temperature sweet fine demerara rum on the side. I prefer to drink them both seperately.

Interestingly (or perhaps not) we've just been working with Pepsi on their new launch - Pepsi Raw. It's a Pepsi formulated using less sugar and natural, organic ingredients. It's got quite a nice stripped down taste with hints of apple and we've been working with them to promote the 'Rum and Raw' bar call

I suppose it's only a matter of time before we see Diet Pepsi Raw

Bundaberg eh? I recently got another aussie rum from Hoochery. It is the Kimberley Cane Spirit and I would describe it as the Vat 69 of rums. Similar taste, only sweeter.

Gimme a Sailor and Diet any day!

Quite a few people have touted the merits of Sailor Jerry, so I went out and bought a bottle. Now I know it is a mixing rum, not a sipping rum, but I always start my analysis neat:

Neat - yummy aroma, cherry! a bit harsh though (the 92 proof at work). Some interesting spice flavors lurking beneath the surface.

Splash of water - smoother, but a short finish, and not a lot of residual flavor.

with Coke - very tasty, great thirst quencher, or for serving to 19 year old vixens

Reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad used to put a splash of syrup from the maraschino cherry jar into my Coke.

Bundy Black was one of my great disappoints a few years ago. I've had more than a few Australian sailors share some Bundy with me while trying to impress me with their country's best. After a few months in the Caribbean most Australians forget about the rum they knew back home and stocked up on Caribbean rum. More than 20 years ago I lived in SW Australia and was introduced to Bundy and wasn't overly impressed but after coming from the Philippines where I had been drinking Tanduay, my expectations were a little high. I had hoped that when an Australian friend brought me a bottle of Bundy Black a few years ago that it was going to be a lot better than it was. Then I learned that, among other things, it is aged in large vats as opposed to the small barrels used at most Caribbean distilleries.

Bundy tales...

I organized a scuba diving expedition for a month to New Caledonia and Vanuatu, traveling to the outer reaches to experience un-explored reefs. After a couple of days in Espiritu Santo, a large cruiser from the Australian Navy showed up in port next to our ship for some R&R. The lads from down under wasted no time getting three sheets to the wind and their favorite ingestions were Bundy and Cola, or Bundy straight from the bottle.

Bundy was new to me and I was eager to discover this rum. They thought it was the greatest spirit ever created, but I was frankly reviled to consider it a fine rum, much less drinkable. Aussies were raised on it and so, they love it. They also love vegimite, a dark brown gnarly food paste made from yeast extract.

Lately, Bundy is reaching out to the greater population of the planet with their finest rums and I wish them well, but I have trouble getting over that stark impression that they're below my bar of acceptable standard.

Somehow missed Philly's recommendation of Sailor and Diet. A frequent enjoyment of mine when a bar is kind enough to carry Sailor instead of just Captain. ;)

I spent the 4th of July in 2007 with a bottle of Sailor.

As for Bundaberg, I have a bottle at home that my buddy brought me from his honeymoon. I haven't written up my tasting notes on it yet...just did a small sampling and wasn't wowed at all.

I suppose it could work in coke...

I picked up 6 cases of Sailor a few months back , as there was a deal at the time. I took one home for personal consumption. Im about 4 bottles in right now.

There is one similar mixing spiced rum I like, VooDoo, made by the RedRum guys. I enjoy its "sasparilla" notes.

Back to bundy, is it really below standard? Should I instruct my mom who is in australia to pick up Inner Circle instead?

Bundy black IS THE BEST RUM IN THE WORLD........Oh damn. I thought I was back in Australia. Trust me JMac. I don't think you'll be the odd man out when you say you dislike BB. The Bundy Gold (which technically isn't even rum as it is bottled at 74% proof) is taste like it was distilled by Robocop. Metalic with a lack of thought. The Over proof is just coloured Aguadiente and the Distillers No.3 ? What the hell were they thinking ? triple filtered , double distilled blend of gold and white..But who am I to argue with the biggest selling rum brand in Australia ????

Right... consider it a point of passage to drink the Bundy 8 -- it certainly won't kill you and will almost certainly give you greater respect for the next rum you ingest.

Fortunate for me, she did not buy it yet, as she was debating how she was going to lug it around for the next months. So I told her bout the Inner Circle Green, and were all good now!

Although, I must confess, Im now very curious about Bundy.

Its like a bad car accident, I CANT look away. I know if a bottle of Bundy is bestowed on me, Ive gotta try this unrefinement you speak of. Have you ever tried Grand Havana Rum? www.grandhavanarum.com

Could it be any worse than this rum?

Well, that takes Bundy off my curious list.

And, by the way, if I had to have cola, it has to be Coke Classic.

I couldn't find any Mexican or Kosher Coke at my usually store today, so I picked up a 12 pack of Jones Pure Cane Cola. It makes a very nice Cuba Libre mixed with Appleton White.

A couple weeks ago in Vegas, my wife and I picked up some samples of new Red Bull Cola. It's an all natural cola product, not an energy drink. It's quite refreshing with a splash of rum!

If you have a Potbelly Sandwich shop nearby, try one of their "Cricket Colas". Technically, it's not theirs, but it's the only place I've seen that serves it. It is a Green Tea Cola, has an interesting taste. Wonder how it would do with rum?

..thought I'd chime in on this, though a little late.

My new favourite mixing rum is Barcelo Anejo; they just started stocking in in my local liquor store. I can't bring myself to add mix to the better (read: easier on the palate) rums in my collection.

For mix its one part cola (diet pepsi, coke zero, etc.) and two parts club soda to get the carbonation and cut the sweetness of the cola.

Also, is it just me, or did anyone else find that when in the caribbean the cuba libres taste better. Yeah, I know, maybe its just the setting and joy of being on holidays, but does the cola actually taste better? Is it because its made with sucrose (from sugar cane) down there? Whereas the colas up here are made with fructose. Just my two cents.

Cheers all,

Duff
