i heard than pyrat xo use to be produce by a company called planters before being produce by patron and apparently the one produce by planters seems to be much better than the new one.is that true or not.
i do have an unopened bottle of the old one and was wondering if it was worth it to buy the new one even so i tried and really like the new one but don t have the heart to open the old bottle i have

Pyrat has only been blended and bottled by the Anguilla Rum Company.

Does one of your bottles have another company name on the label?

yes i know that but before it use to be owned by patron it was owned by planters .the stickers on mine is Planters gold pyrat xo reserve and since patron took over the stickers is pyrat rum xo reserve and even the color of the rum is different .the old one is much darker

I thought my mind was playing tricks on me quite some time back. I originally tasted the Planters Gold at a local bar and enjoyed it enough to go buy a bottle.

Well not remembering the name 100% I found PYRAT XO Reserve and bought a bottle thinking it was the same stuff I tried and liked. Well when I finally got around to tasting it I thought to myself, hmm this tastes different or at least I thought.

After reading the article on Bilgemunky.com a few weeks back I now realized that no my mind was not playing tricks on me...at least not this time around, lol! I spent countless hours trying to find some of the old stuff and to my surprise was able to find 3 bottles. Needless to say I bought them and will covet them. If anyone knows where to get a few of the old Planters Gold let me know.

I can sell mine for 200 euros.

Whats that in U.S. Dollars, like $2,000? (quick crack at the price of the bucK)

Id like a bottle, but perhaps not that bad.

293 dollars. A high price I know but all the planters golds in europe are damn expensive (50-80 euros) and it was very hard for me to find this one :). I haven't dared to crack it open yet and I doubt I will before I get another planters gold and a new XO to compare it with.

a friend of mine did me a favour while i spend two weeks in berlin over christmas. he knew that i became a rum-fan during my time over here in the carribean and asked for a good rum in good liquor store in berlin – he got a bottle of pyrat XO planters gold (for 43,-euros).
well, what i brought was a bottle of ruhm barbancourt five star – what a big difference, of course!
i liked the pyrat (never tried it before), but for me it seems like more like a liqueur, and actually i prefer a little dryer, less flavoured stuff (like the barbancourt... ;-)
but we had fantastic mai tais with an ounce of pyrat and another ounce of the barbancout - the orange note and the deep aged taste combined with that elegance - just great!

it was that good, that i bought i bottle pyrat on my way back to the bahamas in new york. well it was not the planters gold, but the xo reserve, but i paid only 22,-us-dollars for that one. so i hope it's not a deadly sin for you to make cocktail out of such nice and in other parts of the world expensive rums ;-)

Have you checked the German Ebay? you can get the Planters Gold for between 32 and 45 euros..

Dear Count, EBay is not so bad, i have been buying things from EBay for more than 10 years now and never lost anything.
I have instead found things for a good value and also things that are very hard to find..
There is a EBay seller called macha, (mrbourbon)he sells the Pyrat Gold for 32 euros i think it is, i have bought rums from him for several years and he ships fast.
He also has a website with great rum selection but too much higher prices than he takes on EBay. www.macha-weine.de

I bought my Montebello vieux for 6 euros for instance.

Of course it is. I am not giving it easily infact I don't even want to sell it. This one was 50 euros and a lot of detective work in Spain. Bloody expensive if you compare it to the united states where its something like 30 dollars or less.

Ran out of pyrat xo the other day. Have been around copenhagen (where i live) to look for another bottle. The funny thing ia that all shops i have been to have the old version "planters gold" havnt seen the new version any where around here.... ???
In one shop they told me that they had 60 bottles (old version) but now only 12 left. They had them on sale here in january... but I was lucky and got it for a good price (europe wise).

Look here Ton Overmars (http://www.tonovermars.nl/distillaten/rum.html), I've just this morning picked up a new bottle of Pyrat XO from there for 39.70 euro's, and that's a sweet deal!

It is the old version from Planters Gold, Anguilla Rums Ltd.

Maybe you can contact them and have Ton ship you a couple bottles.

I have to say I'm annoyed with so many websites listing as having Planters Gold along with it's picture showing the Planters Gold label only to call them up and find out OPS! it's Pyrat XO Reserve and they try telling me it's the same stuff. Make sure if you find a site that claims to be carrying it that you call first and comfirm it's true identity.

The old is superior to the new. But then again look what happens once Patron got it's hands on it. Seems that since they took it over they changed it's blend.

A sad day in rum land.
