What are your favorite bottle shapes and label designs?
I like the Cruzan frosted bottles. The label on Sailor Jerry is pretty cool. Simple, but not boring. 10 Cane catches my eye as well.
I don't like Malibu's big white bottle.
I'm not sure what I think of the Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay bottles with the see through label on the front and a scene on the back label. Kind of cool but it reminds me of a bottle of Fiji water. I don't like the rectangular shape of the bottle either.

I've allways liked the Myer's Dark label, classic and hasn't changed much over the years.
The Tommy Bahama rums have very classy and sleek packaging... too bad the rum isn't up to the quality of the bottle.
Rum Jumbie liqueur with it's hand painted drummer bottle complete with straw hat is certainly entertaining to say the least!
I also think that the Cruzan bottles are nicely done as well.

I may be biased because of the contents, but I've always been partial to the Ron Zacapa 21-year-old. Not much of a bottle when considering shape, and that weave may be a bit old-fashioned even, but I love the handiwork. I was quite upset when they changed to the glass-with-a-band bottle, but the rum was still good. Luckily for me, I ran into a store that still had some of the old full-weave bottles and I snagged one.
For some reason I like the Foursquare Spiced bottle too. Simple, square.
The Tommy Bahama bottles are definitely cool - I can't wait until I find someone throwing out empties.

For a company that has marketing down pat, I think Bacardi knew what they were doing when they made the Bacardi 8 bottle. It has everything that the casual drinker would consider classy, as well as some throwback style to the bottles of old. Comes with a cork top under a nicely designed black shrink wrap with gold bacardi handwriting, in a rounded shorter bottle. The unglossed finish of the labels add that little extra aged mystique.

Another great bottle is Pyrat XO. It comes in a hand blown short and wide bottle with an orange ribbon and a medallion.

One I probably like the most is Pampero Aniversario. An incredibly dark rum that comes in a short round bottle. The kicker is the rustic leather bag it comes in.

The Ron Centenario XX Anos from Costa Rica in it's leather wrap is sharp, as is the Flor de Cana Centenario 21 Commerative Edtion bottle. Happily what is inside these two bottles is also very fine.

I like this Reserva Especial bottle from Arehucas Distiller, in Canary Islands. I like both the shape of the bottle and its surface.

Though I've soured on the flavor a bit, the Pyrat XO bottle is awesome. And I keep the Hoti medallians that come with it.
I concur with the Pampero bottle...I have a thing for short, squat bottles. Like the El Dorado 12 and 15.
A recent bottle that looked nice is the Santa Teresa 1796. It is tall, with a wax cap on it. Very nice looking, but the cork doesn't seal well. I bought it in Clearwater, Florida to bring home. I had to try a little of it, so I broke the wax seal and popped the cork. Nice rum. I put the cork back in, but it was loose. Sure enough, upending the bottle lead to drips. How am I going to check this in baggage for the flight home without washing my clothes with rum? Solution: a clean, empty St. Pelligrino bottle. I decanted into this bottle, transported both home, and the decanted back into the Teresa bottle. No leaks (with the help of some masking tape, too).

The Elements 8 bottles are excellent. They have recently won an award for their bottle design. Funnily the Tommy Bahama rum bottle looks similar but I can vouch for the rum inside the Elements 8, especially the platinum aged for 4 years.

My vote for nicest bottle/label I have seen would have to go to the Gosling Family Reserve rum. I have to admit I was a sucker for the packaging and forked over the cash to get a bottle.

I like the gold sugar canes on Mount Gay Sugarcane Rum and the drawing on the 10 Cane bottle that's partially covered by the orange label. If I was into tatoos that would be two for me.

I am absolutely amazed no one has mentioned the Khukri Coronation.

That is a wonderful bottle, but a marketing nightmare since it doesn't fit on a store shelf but comes in a box that doesn't stand up on its small end so it tends to get lost in a liquor store, if it gets there in the first place.

Yeah. It's not distributed much in the states anyway. (Only NY and CA as far as I know)
The Cruzan single barrel is another nice addition.
Also, quick question.
As far as the Khukri goes, they have a 750 bottle for the same price as the 375 bottle pictured above (actually, I think the 375 may be a dollar more). It's the same rum, but the 750 bottle is just a regular bottle. If you were buying it, which would you choose?
Would you save a dollar and get twice the rum? Or would you spend the extra money to have the display bottle and half the rum?

As to Ed's comment about this rum getting lost on the shelves, there's no doubt. The first time I saw this rum (in Connecticut, by the way) was way up high on the shelf - 8 feet up - lying on it's side. I almost missed it, but got curious and took it down.
As far as I can tell both bottles contain the same rum. Even the website says "Khukri XXX Rum" for the 750ml and "Coronation Khukri XXX Rum" for the fancy bottle.
As to which... It depends. For an extra $5 you get half the rum and one hell of an interesting keepsake. That bottle has interested everyone I show it to, and they love it. And if you find that like it you can then start spending less and buy the 750ml since you already have one fancy bottle. (Though 3 people have mentioned an interested in wanting the bottle after I finish the rum. I say they should buy their own, because I want this bottle myself!)
I happen to like this rum quite a bit, and feel it's quite a bargain for $20 for a 750ml. I reviewed it some time ago here: http://scottesrum.com/category/all-rum-reviews/khukri-coronation/
I really do need to re-visit it though, and compare it side-by-side to some other rums.

I saw that review.
I actually have it bookmarked. I really like your site. I think I may end up getting the smaller bottle for now. That way I can try it first.
I'm getting ready to build a shelf or two in my office to display bottles. I have tried to keep most of them from my days at a liquor store til now. The coronation would definitely make a nice center piece.

Pyrat XO is really cool, I also like Myers dark, Saint James - both the label and the square shape, El Dorado 15, the old Zacapa with the weave on the whole bottle, Mauny agricole blanc, Depaz blanc,Dillon blanc,Rhum J.M, Montebello (the agricoles because of their colorful labels) Tahitian Noa Noa brun, Cruzans frosted bottles and 10 cane.

My favorite bottles... I love the Sea Wynde (hate the rum). The Barbancourt Reserve is great, the frosted glass feels so nice! I think both Angostura 1919 and 1824 are so elegant! Prichards has nice bottles too. The Santa Teresa 1796 is gorgeous! Most expensive bottle Ive ever seen is the Arehucas Capitan Kidd. Not sure what its made of, stone perhaps?
My least favorite bottles... Tommy Bahama, looks nice, until you have to pour it! Also, the cork break EVERY time. I like to give it a big middle finger every time it breaks! I think the Barrilto has got the boringest labels. Also the One Barrel, with its screw top and cheesy barrel label. The bottle scared me at first, I was glad to see that I liked the rum... I had to buy a 12 bottle minimum! haha
Favorite bottles....
I'm really liking the Pyrat Cask 1623 bottle. The big, heavy glass and the "unfinished" motif is rather cool IMO. The rum's not bad either.
Zaya's bottle is also a nice one, although I always forget and almost destroy the weave around the cork when I first open it.

Reviving an old thread here. I really like the Oronoco bottle. Between the feel of it in your hands, the elaborate cap, recycled leather strip with map of Brazil and everything else; it just looks good. I think it won an award too.

Call me crazy, but I really like the Cockspur 12 bottle as well. It has a nice simplicity to it. It's just a nicely shaped, clear glass bottle with a small black label strip. This lets you see more of the rum it keeps safe. That and the rum itself almost has a red tinge to it which I haven't seen in a lot of other products.

I agree with you Carbon about the Cockspur 12 bottle. Its beauty lies in its simplicity.
Like other posters have said, the Pampero Aniversario bottle is also one of my favourites (as well as being one of my favourite rums). Others from my collection that I really like include the Ron Mocambo 20 yr art edition, the old Santa Teresa Selecto, Cacique Añejo and anything from the Barbancourt series (I don't know why but I just really like their labels).
I also love the old Zacapa palm-woven wrapped bottles but I've not seen any of those around for ages.

and anything from the Barbancourt series (I don't know why but I just really like their labels).
Maybe because they look almost retro? I don't have much background but the labels look almost as if they've been relatively unchanged for decades.

I just checked through this thread and found I have to very grudgingly agree with Angus Winchester. The Myers Legend bottle has always done it for me - that rope wrapped neck is the coolest damn thing in the world to pour from.

I tend to swing towards bottles that are unique as my favourites, such as the triangular J.Bally, Pusser's Decanters, Brugal Siglo de Oro, Flor de Cana Cetenario21, Edwin Charley Proprietors Collection, Barcelo Imperial, Botran Solera, the original CSR, St.Lucia Stackables (3 bottles in one), Pampero Annivesario, the old Cuban style tall slim brown bottles (& the old Bacardi Aсejo), the new Barcelo Aсejo and Gran Aсejo. I'll stop there as I need a drinkcheers.gif

I have only seen photos but the Edwin Charlie set looks great.
I'll second the Pyrat cask bottle - the old hand blown early Pyrat XO bottles need to be mentioned - the new ones leave me cold.
I really like the Cuzan single barrel, Angostura 1796 and El Dorado 25 too.
Appleton and El Dorado have great shaped bottles that are let down by the labels.
Vizcaya is the worst - looks like a giant after shave bottle. The fact that I don't care for the contents might be clouding my judgement on that one a little.

I like the Cockspur 12 bottle too. Mount Gay XO uses the same or at least a very similar bottle as well. But the Admiral Rodney bottle is probably my favorite so far.

I have a couple of favorites to look at. Neither are stellar rums. Khukri Corronation rum is a must have for a collection just because the knife/bottle is so unusual. Also, I love to have a few of the Pusser's rum decanters on the shelf. Anyone who sees them in the cabinet asks about them.
Now for the bottles for which I love the contents too. Brugal Siglo de Oro is a unique bottle and the rum is well done. I also love the shape of the appleton bottles and the roundness of the rums. Even the new 30 year is a similar bottle design ( I can't wait to get a couple of those!).
By the way. I am enjoying a Foursquare and diet coke right now. Excellent party rum.love1.gif

I really love the Zacapa bottles, especially the XO. I like the Pyrat bottles as well, and I too collect the Hoti medallions.
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned it, but the Angostura 1824 bottle is really nice. Very classy.
The Captain Morgan's Private Stock bottle is also pretty cool. I like the old bottles and the new, always made you feel like you were drinking something really special.

I am a big fan of the change in the Mount Gay XO bottle. I own the previous 2 interations of this great rum. The last one was the shorter bell shaped bottle and the one before that, from the 80's, was the taller standard height bottle. This time, Mount Gay sets this rum apart from its lesser products. It even gets better with the design for the 1703. I had them for tasting this past weekend when my family and friends were staying with us for Ms. Rumdog's birthday. Most of the group wanted to sample the contents just because of the bottle design. They looked right past the Appleton 21!

Speaking of Appleton, I really like their bottles as well. The look of their 30 year bottle is really cool, keeping the basic shape of their other bottles but spritzing up the image a bit:

Here's a shot of my favourite bottle (from another thread)
A friend of mine who is a photographer dropped by the other day and spied my still-to-be-opened bottle of Botran. He loved the look of the bottle and said he had to get some shots of it (I confirmed that he meant photos, not shots of the rum). So, feeling a little uneasy, I let him take it with him.
Here's one of the shots to get you through the day:
