View Full Version : Cachaзa in Europe

A friend of mine is implementing a cocktail programme in Paris and was asking for recommendations for decent cachaзa that is imported and distributed thereabouts. Cachaзa is somewhat outside his---and my---areas of knowledge, but he knows this bar needs to stock some for the inevitable caipirinha-orderers, and he prefers to support the better makers. Any tips from anybody?

One cachaca that is readily available, and of middling quality is the Pitu brand. I've purchased this in duty free in Germany, and it seems to be the most commonly exported brand of cachaca worldwide.

Yea, I'm hoping for some more compelling options than Pitu.

Hi, I don't know if your friend has the possibility to go to London, but if he's ever there he might want to look into the options at
"The Whisky Exchange" . I just scrolled through and he just might find something of interest:

Is Cachaca 61 any good? it is the only Cachaca available in Vancouver, Canada.
If not, I guess I'll wait until I get the chance to go to Las Vegas, and I'll bring back some Agua Luca.

contact John Gakuru (John@sagatiba.com) who have great product plus deep pockets.
Otherwise UK is probably your best bet with Ypioca, Carioca, Germana and many others...
Mention my name and get a wry smile...

I've had Cachaзa 51, but never heard of Cachaзa 61. Cachaзa 51 is produced by a large distillery so consistency isn't a problem as it can be at some of the smaller producers. I don't drink a lot of cachaзa, but I don't find that one disagreeable when mixed in cocktails.

In Brazil rum is a very different spirit compared to cachaзa. Rum is made from molasses and cachaзa is made from sugar cane juice.
When ever I'm in a new location, I always try to sample as many different spirits as possible. Though conditions sometimes dictate otherwise, I try to taste spirits neat. If I find the spirit to be offensive neat, I don't really want to drink it covered up with some, generally, sweet mixer.
I also ask local people what they like to drink and why. I've discovered some amazing spirits simply talking to people I've met along the way. If you can find and visit the distilleries you'll probably find some better spirits which you won't find anywhere else.
Happy hunting.

It's true that Pitu is widely available in Europe as it is bottled in Germany and has been for a long while. Germany consumes the most cachaça a year anywhere outside of South America! Germany consumes almost 4.5 million litres a year! Pitu is considered to be one of the mass market brands. The others being Cachaça 51, Ypioca and Velo Barreiro. These four brands contribute to the bulk of the cachaça volume in Brasil and around the world. Cachaça 51 is the biggest of all with 35% market share.

Hi,
I believe that Cachaca 61 is made in Spain not Brazil.
So according to the Cachaca quiz that I just took, only Cachaca made in Brazil is real Cachaca, although the USA TTB does not make a distinction based on origin ( or even recognize Cachaca as a spirit).
What do you think is Cachaca 61 really Cachaca ??

Cachaзa is not a spirit category according to the TTB, yet, but there is work going on to acknowledge it as such.
I have not seen or heard of Cachaзa 61, though I am familiar with P51 from Brazil.

Here in Europe there are a lot of importers for Cachaca, espacally Cachaca Artesanal. Some of their products and desciption of the producers you can find on my homepage as well.
In Brazil their are over 5000 official producers for Cachaca...

I've seen about 15 cachaзa brands from Germany and brought some back from Holland last month. There is Saphy International in France which stocks Velho Barreiro. You can't go wrong with that or the Sagatiba range.

Hi,

I'm curious, what makes you think Cachaзa 61 is made in Spain?
I have a bottle at home, and don't remember any reference to Spain on the bottle. I'm curious, because sugar cane distillation would be unusual there.
I'm not even going to get into the added costs of transporting cane or juice to another continent while highly experienced distillers are available in Brazil
The company has offices in Sao Paulo and three distribution centers Brazil.
I don't see the logic of sending cane or juice from Brazil to Spain and then transporting it back to Brazil for global distribution

We can only get 2 cachacas here. Ypioca and Pitu. I got the Ypioca gold which i like. I also got 3 bottles of Sagatiba pura from Germany which is nice too. I`m hoping to soon get a bottle of Leblon.

There are at least a few small rum distillers in Spain, but to transport juice or cut sugar cane more than a few miles is a complete folly.

So, just for the hell of it, I took a couple of crappy pictures of the label on my bottle of Cachaзa 61 tonight. Now, granted, this bottle is about six months old, but nothing on the bottle suggests Spanish distillation or distribution
