My hands down favorite are the Brinley line of flavored rum. I have been wanting to try the Santa Theresa Araka (coffee flavored) and Orange but I have yet to find them.

Santa Teresa Araku coffee is a winner, as is their Orange Rum Liqueur, which goes very well in a snifter after dinner.

Clement Creole Shrubb is a more delicate orange flavor.

Montecristo Spiced Rum makes a great holiday cocktail.

The orange, key lime and lemon flavored rums from Empire (http://www.empirewineryanddistillery.com) are great for cooking, making cocktails and sipping for a special occasion.

Taylor's Velvet Falernum is a classic for making Caribbean cocktails.

Foursquare spiced is also quite good.

I agree with Robert, the Montecristo Spiced rum is terrific! I have yet to try the Foursquare though.

For a nice banana flavor, the Canne Banane Brulee is nice. Its subtle and lite, not too sweet.

RedRum is good too, its my favorite rum "shot"

And my favorite flavored rum is Castries Peanut Rum Cream. Oh Castries... how I dream about you...

I forgot about the Castries! Damed fine stuff, for sure.

And I just realized that a friend came up from NYC and asked if I wanted anything, and I couldn't think of anything... NOW I remember the Castries! Argh!

Never heard about this one..but the name alone stir my imagination..and something with a subtle banana flavor that is not too sweet seems nice.
A spiced rum with flambeed bananas, could that be close?

Tiare, its definitely worth the couple bucks to try this rum out. Its down to $7.99 out here, they had trouble going through inventory, so guess who wins in that one! :)

Cannot find this rum Canne banane brulee in Europe..is there not any way to try to make a substitute that is somewhat similar?
If i spice a rum (which rum would do best here?) with flambeed bananas and dark sugar or molasses?

I've never had the Castries cream, but I do still have 2 bottles of its predecessor: Nuts'N'Rum.

My wife will occasionally break that out and make Peter Pans using a recipe we got from our bartenders in St. Lucia during our honeymoon.

Peter Pan? I've never heard of this drink. Was this a local concoction, or is my mixed drink ignorance showing once again? Regardless, would your wife mind sharing the recipe. As a fan of all things Peter Pan, I can't pass up a drink with such a name. Thanks in advance.

I'll confess that I have never heard of nor seen the drink outside of St. Lucia and my kitchen. I do not honestly know if it is known beyond those two places.

I don't know the specifics of the drink, but I've sent an email to my wife asking for the recipe, which I will post here.

Please don't. It already sounds good, and I won't be able to get my hands on Castries for a while.

:-)

Just kidding of course. And hopefully I'll be getting a couple bottles at the end of Feb when I pass thru NYC.

Deliciousness is...

2 parts Castries
1 part Port

Makes a Peanut Butter and Jelly shot. When poured together neat, it tends to coagulate, so I recommend chilling and shaking.

Thanks to Clyde at Castries for that recipe!

I know itll be carried in PA within the next couple weeks, by the time I get back in to NY, Ill have it already.

Castries is a product I really hope becomes the next big thing, as its creators are genuine and dedicated. (David is the CEO and Clyde is the President. David gets the bigger title only because he took the sacrifice of leaving his job to work on Castries for 2 years before Clyde joined suit. Dedication will pay off for them!) And the fact that it is an amazing spirit doesnt hurt!

Castries seems to be good according to what i read here, how does it taste?

Scottes

...how does it taste?
The first smells are a very nice balance of cream, peanuts, and slightly fainter rum. While this is to be expected I have to mention that there’s a very nice balance here - no one smell is predominant. The rum smell is a little beneath the surface and I wouldn’t be surprised if a non-rum drinker would not recognize it as rum. A good sip - it’s only 32-proof, remember - continues that balance of flavors I mentioned. This is very nice, though I have to think that it hasn’t opened up yet. A cream liqueur drunk neat is not ideal. Another sip was swished about gently since I wanted to check the mouthfeel. Most cream liqueurs coat the mouth with a cream leftover that I generally find unpleasant since I am not a lover of milk. The Castries also does the same, though it’s a bit cleaner than other creams I’ve had. The swish seems to have brought out the peanuts since they were predominant this time, pleasantly so, but noticeable. The finish here is expectedly mellow, but this is where the small amount of spices make themselves known.

Overall this has a very nice balance of tastes. The rum hides in the background a bit more than in the smell, and the peanuts come up a notch. The spices after the swallow are very pleasant and a nice way to finish.

RumBarPhilly

I have a steady supply of Sailor Jerry, as Its my rum and diet choice. Despite its artificial flavors and extreme harshness when drank neat, its mellow cherry flavors accent my diet coke very well.

I agree Philly. I don't like cherry coke - too sweet. But diet Coke with a little Jerry thrown in is quite nice!

Adam, I noticed you said you like the Redrum for a rum shot. I picked up one of those minis of the VooDoo by redrum today, and compared it to Sailor Jerry's.

I do really like the Sailor Jerry's in a diet coke, tastes great and I like the cherry flavor to it.

The VooDoo is quite good as well, I took a few sips from the bottle before I poured it in my coke, and the VooDoo is quite good, and I could probably drink this straight. Nice, smooth spice taste, didn't have that cherry "wang" to it like Jerry, different, but quite nice. Not too expensive either.

I really dig the Voodoo. It gives the soda almost a root beer flavor. Defintely an interesting take on the whole "spiced" rum genre. I would probably tend to favor it over sailor jerry, however the Sailor is abundant here in PA and NJ, but the Voodoo was de-listed bout 6 months ago, cant find it anymore, at least in PA.

Yes! Bingo! I noticed that too. I'm fortunate my local outlet carries Redrum and VooDoo, and usually seems to have a good 7 bottles of each on the shelf at all times.

Sailor Jerry is very prevalent here in 750ml bottles and what look to be 1.75ml bottles too.

I like them both! Very different, both enjoyable.

I was never a Captain fan, but Jerry and VooDoo have changed my perspective on spiced rums. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a bottle of Foursquare sometime, as I keep hearing it brought up again and again, and never with any negative attachments to go along with it.

Foursquare is delightful, not expensive and somewhat in a class by itself. One of the best is certainly Montecristo Spiced from Guatemala.

Yes, I was just about to add Montecristo Spiced to the party. Also, Old New Orleans Cajun Spiced is very nice.

I would put Montecristo, Foursquare, and New Orleans in a different category, however, from Captain, Sailor, and VooDoo.

Montecristo, Foursquare, and New Orleans are more flavored with actual spices and less sweetness. Sometimes I wonder how Sailor Jerry is considered a spiced rum, more of just a sweet flavored rum.

I'll be in Ybor City Friday morning through Sunday morning at the Hilton Garden Inn. For any MOR members attending, send me a private message to get my cell phone number. Let's meet Friday evening at Gaspar's Grotto for the Rum BBQ.

At the Ybor City tasting event in 2006, I thought Pirate's Choice tasted more like a key lime flavoring added to neutral rum, whereas Empire's Key Lime Rum tasted more like the real fruit to me.

In terms of spiced or flavored rums, I'm interested in the Papagayo organic spiced rum, Rogue Spirits Hazelnut, and the Whaler's varieties.

Well, in the past, I have tried Cruzan Dark Rum that I infused with Columbia River Tart Cherries and Bing cherries. Very delicious since the cherries naturally sweetened the rum infusion.

8 oz. Columbia River Tart Cherries (dried or preferrably fresh)
8 oz. Bing (dried or preferrably fresh)
1 bottle (either 750 mL or 1 L) Cruzan Dark Rum

Infuse in glass jar for three days, and strain into the same rum bottle. (I used an Infusion Jar I purchased from Infused Vodka.com....I find it works on rum just as well as vodka.)

I have a steady supply of Sailor Jerry

i made up an amazing cocktail with the Sailor called:

Same Sex Marriage

1 shot Sailor Jerry
1 shot Pango
Stir with ice and 'strain' into a chilled 'cocktail' glass,
garnished with 2 'brandied cherries',
add a bar spoon of juice from the jar
top up with sparkling wine (i use cava!)

The cocktail is great, try it. . . i dare you!!!
and the recipe is laden with double entendre's!

I know Castries is available in Massachusetts......because I sell it. It is doing very well for me. There is no better way to warm up after shoveling snow than to make a big cup of hot chocolate with a VERY healthy portion of Castries mixed in. It actually gives the hot chocolate a very creamy texture.

I also sell Brinleys and can't say enough good things about the brand.

Both of these rums, and the people behind them, deserve all the good things that happen to them. They're quality products produced by quality people.

I notice that flavored rums are around 25% alcohol. Is that because a lower proof rum is used to make the product? Or, is a typical 40% alcohol used and the additives change the volume to get the lower proof flavored rum?

That's a good question T2R. When you give the alcohol % I believe you are meaning % ABV and not proof.

Even 40% ABV alcohol has been diluted with water before it reaches the market.

It would be my guess that many of the flavored rums on the market (and in reference to member "Bill" I refer to rums labeled as flavored) are using a base spirit that is refined to a very high degree ABV. A lower distillation point might allow too much of the rum "side effects" to show through if it is not blended very carefully.

Thanks Rum Runner for the info!

Does anyone have a source for flavored rum recipes?

I went ahead and began the process of making some banana rum but have some questions. I am currently working off of a liqueur recipe but this will end up very sweet and higher proof than typical flavored rums. If I cannot find the info I will reduce the sugar and dilute to 50 proof.
