Feel free to hijack this thread if its already been done, but I couldnt find the title anywhere.
So what are some of your favorite sipping rums?
Maybe we can get a dialogue on some of these and maybe find some new ones for the liquor cabinet.
Some of my personal favorite include - Pyrat XO, Zaya 12 year, Mt. Gay XO, Santa Theresa 1796, and El Dorado Special Reserve 12 year

Every day is different. Yesterday was all about Diplomatico, I just couldnt stop. TOday... the Mt Gay XO perhaps, I forgot I had that in my collection at home, found it hiding in the back.
Generally the Angostura 1824, RdB-3, and Zacapa 23 are the usual suspects though.

RumBarPhilly- How is the Diplomatico? I see it constantly, but have yet to try it.. as memory serves at least. I have a buddy on the east coast that loves it, compares it to the Zaya 12 year, though slightly spicy and less fruity. Thoughts?

Of all the wonderful rums we featured at our December tasting event -- Great Rum Makes A Great Holiday Gift (we sold 105 bottles in less than 2 hours), the number one brand sold was Diplomatico. When people try a few rums at a tasting and decide which one to buy, Diplomatico does very well. It's sweet, viscous, flavorful, creamy and not expensive. I consider it a dessert rum that plays well in a snifter, like Santa Teresa Orange Rum Liqueur.

Sounds like I might have to make room of the shelf for that one -Might need to clear some room cause I still have to leave room for Vizcaya VXOP ... brother to be back in about a week.

I had it referred to me by Scotte from this forum. I special ordered it and gave it a go. The first time I had it, I didnt enjoy. I think i wasnt feeling well and any alcohol in me wouldnt bear well. But the other night, I had a little more and its got this sneaking sweetness to it that I never noticed. Its very complex, not like Zaya. I find Zaya much more one-dimensional (but what a good dimension that is!) I would compare it more to a Barbandcourt 15 year, but with a slightly bigger bite. It does have a nice mdeium to long finish as well.

It all depends on the type of day I had at the office. I am partial to Venezuelan rums and really enjoy the Diplomatico, Pompero and my current favorite is Ron Ocumare Anjeo but I have not been able to locate it anywhere after I bought the last 7 bottles that planet of wine had.....

I hope so I know I used to get it from winechateau, pop's wine and spirits and planet of wine and all of them have been out of stock for several months. I noticed that winechateau and pops have removed it from their websites....let me know if you end up getting yours order in.

Just picked up two bottles of Occumare Anejo Especial. I'm wondering if its the same thing as the Occumare Anejo. I had a bottle a while ago. It was good, but I thought of it as an afternoon rum due to the Guarana. It adds a bit of a fruity flavour and quite the caffeine kick, so its only for when i don't plan to sleep soon.

My bottles of Ocumare do not have Guarana in them. The only rum that I have had that had Guarana in it was Cohete Gold from Panama which I found to be decent as well. My bottle of white Ocumare has the Especial label but not my Anejo bottle.....you may have yet another Ocumare rum I will need to hunt down and try :)

P.I.N.K. will be releasing a guarana and caffeine infused white rum late in 2008/early 2009. Not sure how its going to fare, its vodka is over-priced and not that good, they rely solely on marketing themselves as "What the stars drink".

I finally had the chance to taste the Diplomatico, thanks to a friendly bartender at Rumba in Boston.
This is one of the best sippers I have ever enjoyed. I did not find it overly sweet, like so many other rums being marketed today. I thought the sweet note was well in balance with all of the other flavors and spices. What really intruiged me was the overall intensity of the flavors, and the peppery note sitting on top of everything else.
Probably a bit too much for the novice rum drinker, but definitely should be a fun experience for anyone already hooked on rum. And one I hope to repeat over and over again.

That wonderful Diplomatico experience is repeated over and over here rather more times than is healthy!

I love the 21yr old as well. We are out of it in Ontario, but I just had a mule bring over two bottles from Nova Scotia. Just bought the 15yo but have not cracked it open.
I'm also enjoying the Pampero Anejo Sellecion 1938.
