I stumbled across this group while searching out rum links of one kind or another.
I live in Ontario, Canada not far from Buffalo. I am new to the rum scene and am just getting my sea legs so to speak. I have been fortunate to amass a fairly decent collection in this short time. I have the following in my collection, but not all have been cracked open as of yet:
- All the appletons (XV, extra, reserve & master legacy blend) everything except the 21 year old, which is not available at this time.
- Flor de Cana 18 year old
- Pyrat XO
- Admiral Rodneys from St. Lucia
- Mount Gay XO
- Inner Circle Green dot (from australia)
Plus all the typical more common stuff that is available at the LCBO here in Ontario (its like a government run store - the only place to buy booze). My current favorite is the Mount Gay, but I am looking forward to trying all of them when the time is right.
I am off to Las Vegas in 2 weeks, so I will be buying something to add...hopefully Pyrat Cask or Zaya Gran reserva.
Cheers!

Greetings to you. That's a hell of a rum selection you have there. Can't believe some of them are still unopened - I take more of a kiddy in a sweet shop approach to my rums and the corks are ripped off almost as soon as the bottle hits the bar!
What do you think of the Appleton selection up to the Blenders Legacy? Canada is Appleton's biggest worldwide market - you guys go through a lot of it by all accounts

I guess my approach is somewhat opposite of yours Pauli. I dont like to keep everything open, I try to only have a few open at a time. I am not sure what my reasoning is. Perhaps I dont want to dive right in and waste stuff I may not be able to replace readily. I know some of my collection is well rated and I know I am new and I would like to appreciate them for what they are.
I have downloaded the Rum University from Luis Ayala's website and I am hoping to work through it, gain appreciation and experience in the process. By then hopefully I can enjoy my small but decent "newby" collection.
I have always loved Appletons. Years ago my wife and I went to Jamaica (before I learned to like rum) and I sent my wife to the duty free for "something Jamaican" and damn didnt she some back with Bacardi white rum...I was mad.
I will be honest with you I havent opened the Reserve or the Legacy yet. I do however quite like the XV and the Extra. I have been bugging the Appletons rep in Canada to find out when more will be coming.
Cheers
Welcome to the Ministry! Good to have you aboard!

I will gladly trade you one bottle of the Appleton 21 for a bottle of the Master Legacy Blend, which is not available here.
I've been invited to tour the distillery in March and I plan share my notes with those on the forum when I return.

Is the appleton 21 year old readily available in the US? Have you seen it in stores lately? Based on my conversation with the Canadian distributor, there is just none to be had anywhere (not even in the US). Now I have also read lately that Appleton shipped a huge quantity to Australia, for what reason I cant remember. For all I know, those Aussies are drinking my share!
I would gladly trade you the Legacy. I know the LCBO in Hamilton where I live is one of the few specific stores where it can be purchased. Last I checked, they still have 3 or 4. The only downside, I would get hammered with an outrageous duty...to bad you arent in Canada, it would make it much easier!

Half of all Appleton 21 production comes to Florida in October each year. it's not everywhere, but it not hard to find until it runs out. I have several bottles here. But I cannot get the legacy. It may be nearly impossible to actually ship the products to each other, but you can always fly to Miami (it is the winter time and quite warm here now) to make the switch.

Robert, you should have asked Richard Seale to pick you one up. I bought one at Barbados duty free

I think you are right, unfortunately. With all the duty problems, plus the cost of shipping it may be somewhat cost prohibitive (at least for me). I do have the advantage of having a product that is overall more rare (for you). I can be certain that within the next year, more of the 21 will hit shelves...the same cannot be said for the Legacy Blend for the american buyer.
Just so you know, I did talk to someone at Appleton about the Legacy. I asked why it was only on the Canadian website and not on the main Appleton page. They told me that they were in the process of trying to ship the Legacy elsewhere. So if that is true, you should bide your time...it will come eventually.
Just out of curiousity what does the 21 sell for in the US?

Depends on where you look. I've seen it online for as little as $75. I've seen it on store shelves for as much as $120.
