Review: Macombo 20 Anos Anejo Rum

I have developed many new friendships since I started blogging about rum and whisky. In fact, I have a little tasting/get together every two weeks or so, and I usually invite some of my old friends, and some of my new friends. The idea is that we each bring something to try; we taste it together; and we learn what we like and dislike.

One of my new friends, (Jason from the Ministry of Rum) brought a bottle of 20 year old Mexican rum to the gathering about two months ago. After the tasting he generously left me with enough rum to complete a review. (I am blessed to have generous friends).

The Ron Macombo 20 year old rum is distilled by Licores Veracruz, S.A. de C.V. According to their website the 20 year old edition which I sampled is called The Art Edition. The Art Edition is a throwback style of rum which uses old techniques of production, and then combines those techniques with modern aging to produce an aged rum of very unique taste and character.

“…The Macombo 20 Art Edition is a style of rum that genuflects at the altar of old wood without apology. The rum embraces its age, and its time spent in wooden casks. In fact I would say the Macombo Art Edition is a celebration of old wood and cask aging….”

Hey right on. Good review Chip. I think we talked about this but I too found this rum to get a little better each time I tried it. When I was in LA I was looking at a bottle in BevMo and almost bought it again... I held off since I wanted to get another Spanish labeled bottle when I in Mexico next spring.

Thanks Jason for the nice comments and the nice Rum. When you are in Mexico, you'll have to pick up an extra bottle for me. (If you have room in your luggage of course)

A very good rum with a distinct personality. Impossible to find in Canada and even hard to find in Mexico (it was not at the airport in Cancun).

I will definitely grab a bottle if I stumble onto this rum. The Pistol edition is nice too.

I don't recall if I saw it in the Cancun airport or not, but I found it all over the 5th ave strip in Playa del Carmen when I was there last year. I hope it's there again when I return.

It can't be found at Cancun airport (which has a very poor selection of rums). Playa del Carmen seems more promising than Cancun. I did a lot of footwork trying to find Mocambo 20 in Cancun. I found it eventually and bought the last two bottles in a small bottle shop somewhere on the strip. Most shops I entered had only the cheaper Mocambos. Even in the rest of Mexico (I went to D.F plus many other cities) I couldn't find it. It seems that the Mocambo 20 is a tough one to find if you don't know where to look for it, and there wouldn't appear to me much demand for it domestically (I would met 95% of it goes abroad).
