I have been recently been enjoying certain white rums as sipping rums and was wondering if anyone else had any favorites. Granted they don't have the same flavor depth as an aged dark rum, but still find them very enjoyable...my current favorites are:
Barbancourt
Ocumare
Brugal
Palo Viejo (the cheapest of the bunch but surprisingly good)

Have you tried El Dorado 3 year old? It's probably the best white rum I've ever tasted, and can certainly be sipped.

Diplomatico Blanco is amazing.

I picked up a bottle of havana club anejo blanco at a duty free shop on the way back from the Cook Islands. It is far better than I expected! It is very pleasant to sip and much more complex than I thought a white rum could be, but then again I have not gone to the ends of the earth sampling very many white rums. I may have to do so now.

Oronoco is a good white sipper as well. I too like the HC but tend to use it more for mojitos.
Neisson is pretty good as well, especially in the summer.
I haven't had Diplomatico Blanco, but I have had El Dorado 3yr, and can vouch that it is a truly worthy white rum.

I tend to enjoy Mount Gay Platinum White, Ron Matusalem Platino, and Tommy Bahama White Sands...
Recently, I tried Cruzan Aged White and was please with it....
I like to "shoot" my white rum....not really sip.

Oronoco
Elements Eight Platinum
and Toz White
3 stunning white rums not mentioned yet. Toz is finished in port casks and is a real treat and Oronoco not only has the prettiest bottle in Christendom, it's a great aged white rum.
Very few of these listed are 'white' rums though? Aged and filtered is cheating, surely?

Wish we had E8 out here in the States.
The Oronoco bottle is great, though I'm not a fan of the spout, which pours messily without a speedpour.
Diplomatico Blanco is a good sipper.
ED3 is a good sipper, though it's such a wonderful mixer too, I swear sometimes I don't know how the lime and sugar got into that glass.
I've also been known to enjoy a glass of La Favorite Blanc from time to time.

I'm not sure if it is cheating but I do believe that perhaps a new classification is needed. I am starting to call them 'Premium Whites' although as that label has its problems as well.

What are some examples of a "pure" white (unaged, unfiltered) rum?
Are we talking about overproof rums like Wray & Nephew (don't think it is aged)...
Even some 151s are aged...
Could be wrong though...

Rhum Bologne is my go-to sipper. You could also perhaps do Barbancourt white. It's certainly easier to find. I agree on El Dorado 3 also.

Many white rums are aged then filtered back to white. This was the technique that made Bacardi. In last years MoRum competition, this is what I did with my entries in the white rum category.

Have you tried Prichards Crystal rum from Tennessee (yes - Tennessee). Very smooth...

I second this. I don't typically go out of my way to get white rums, but a bottle of Havana Club Anejo Blanco fell into my lap last summer. I'm not one to turn down free rum, even if it's something I normally wouldn't buy. It surprised me though; the rum was very smooth and easy to sip, with a pleasant - but not cloying - sweetness to it. It lacked the harshness that I had previously associated with white rums.
I can't really describe it any better than that without a bottle in front of me, but suffice to say it's the only white rum I'm actively seeking another bottle of, and there's a good reason for that.

If you know of a source for Rhum Bologne yellowbird, without travelling to Guadeloupe or France, please advise. Drop me an email message if you like.
My interest in Rum began with Rhum Agricole, has ranged pretty widely since, only to focus recently on agricoles again. While we love the rhums of Martinique, the products of the distilleries of Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante, as yet untried, sound too good to resist. Both Rhum Bologne blancs, 55% and 50%, are of particular interest due to their unusual production and fine reputation among MOR members.

I completely agree. Their is something about the HC Anejo Blanco and HC 3 Year which put them on the top shelf. I understand that they are blended rums. Several rums which I have tried come close to my love for these white rums, but.....

Yes. It was smooth, but has a stronger caramel element than any other white rum I've tried. I didn't much care for it.
That was in mid 2006. It may be the current version is more restrained in the caramel department.

I'd suggest trying Pritchard's again when you have the opportunity. A couple of things have changed. One of them is the rum, though it was good in 2006. Your taste may have also changed slightly. None of us are getting any younger and our tastes do mature with, well, maturity.
