View Full Version : Monthly Live Rum Chat

Every 2nd Wednesday night at 8pm ET I intend to go into the chat room and have a glass of the rum of the month. The 2nd wednesday will give us all an opportunity to acquire the rum of the month, and 8PM ET does allow a good portion of us to attend. If 9PM ET worked out better for people I could be persuaded to that time as well. This is open to all members and I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible can attend. Bottoms up brothers!

A better question would be "What is the rum of the month going to be for February?" since we've already missed the second Wednesday this month.
Hi RonJames,
Maybe 9PM with be better for our friends from the West Coast, it would be 6PM for them.

ya I figure Feb. 1st Im logging onto this site, checkin out whatever bottle it is, and going hunting. I was thinking the same thing about 9pm...get some more west coasters in on it. I know that theres a strong following in BC with RRI, and its always fun to raise a glass with forrest.
Just thought of something...we could do the previous rum of the month. That gives us a whole month to find the rum, which might be a problem for some of our more rum limited areas. The 1st one would be appleton estate reserve. What you guys think?

I am definitely in on this...
I think 9pm works great for the west coast...our friends across the pond might like 8pm. Let's start with 9pm and see how it goes!!! For me, it is great because the little ones will be "down for the count".
Perhaps push it to the last Wed of the month...that would give us ample time to hunt and we could still stay current with monthly theme.
In order to give Appleton Reserve an approrpiate send-off, we may need to do something this weekend!!!
Instead of Wing Bowl (a Philly thing)...it would be like Rum Bowl!!!

From the west coast...im good either way..8 or 9 pm....
From a memory stand point....im better at remembering the first what ever day of the month...rather then the last...that one sorta always gets away from me...lol
I like the suggestion of giving a month notice of what ever it is you are planning on reviewing...gives ya time to go out and hunt it down...lol

Im not sure what the previous rum of the months have been. I will say however that I did pick up this weekend a bottle of Appleton Estate Reserve and will be cracking it open Next week, Feb. 10th at 9pm ET. The more that can join, the better.

I will be there with my Appleton. I coincidentally will be reviewing the full Appleton line up this month. My review for the VX will be available soon, and I plan to move right up the Appleton Ladder to the 21 year Old over a span of six weeks. The Reserve Tasting fits in perfectly. (I have even scored a sample of the Dark rum overproof to review)
See ya next Wednesday!glass.gif

If you follow the link to the present rum of the month (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumofthemonth.php) from the front page, you'll find the previous rums of the month below the recipes.
As for the next Rum of the Month, I'm always open to suggestions. My criteria is based on how much I have been able to verify about the particular spirit. I like to have an interview with someone from the company, preferably the distiller. I want to showcase not only sugar cane spirits, but spirits that are unique and available to more than a few people who might live in a small distribution region.

Arctic, for the reserve tasting you might want to bring some ginger ale with you as well as your typical coke. The wife and I love muddling a piece of candied ginger with the V/X and then adding ice and ginger ale to it. Might also work out for the reserve.

I'd love to see either the El Dorado 15 or the MGXO in the coming months but the list could always go on...........yay.gif

MGXO, ED15, yummy. I was thinking about the ED15 last night but was out with my wife and mother for dinner and had to slurp down a jug of sangria. Really wanted the ED15

I might be late getting to the rum chat this week if I make it at all. The reason is that I have been invited on a tour of a Southern Alberta distillery on Tuesday, where I will be learning how they make their brand of Caribbean Rum, and well as their great rye whisky.
I will be traveling back to Edmonton on Wednesday, and I am not sure I will make it back in time. I am really interested in the discussion though, so if there is some way to save read the discussion after the fact then I would love to know it.
I will be there in spirit even if I cannot make it in body.

I was looking forward to seeing you there arctic but understand the difficulties. A distillery tour is always a blast, keep us updated on what you see/learn. As for me I was getting warmed up for wed. night by drinking a few glasses of the appleton 12. Pot still heavy, brown sugar, orange, ginger spice.

Thanks to all that turned out. I think we had 8-10 people sippin' away with one hand and typing with the other. I know going into it that I was expecting an average rum between the V/X and the 12. What I found was totally different. bananna smell, vanilla initial, butterscotch middle, with a mild citrus burn. Totally different than the v/x or 12. One of those that could be sipped but most people would prefer diluted with an ice cube or coconut water. Good for the price and worth having on the shelves.
Next rum tasting (drum roll) is gonna be Leblon cachaca on March 10th 9pm ET. Initially I had my reservations about having Leblon for the monthly tasting but then thought "What the heck, you've got to try it once and it might as well be with some buddies" If I end up not liking it, hey I'll smile and know that I gave it a try. It is also to be noted that I will have a few cocktails ready to be made with Leblon as I see initially trying it straight then moving into the glass with other ingredients. Hope you all join me.

Hey RJ,
Wednesday night was a blast. I really enjoy the chat and my guest are about to join us at the MOR. They enjoyed the insight given by one and all and I'm sure we pumped a couple dollars into the Jamaican economy via our consumption. My group consumer a bottle that night. (As we say in the Caribbean... never put a cap back on a dead soldier)
I've not decided what I'm drinking or smoking for the weekend yet.
Wednesday night was a lot of fun. Typing was harder as the night went on, there must be an explanation for that...
I've never tried cachaca and was not planning to buy it, but I changed my mind and will be there next month. I will need guidance for mixing, since I guess we won't sip all night.

lololol, im gonna steal that one gecko. Glad you could join us and that your friends will be along. As for the Cachaca, I've been looking up some recipes and there's two that intrique me so far Ben. The traditional caipirahna(sp?) and another involving muddling watermelon. I might have trouble getting watermelon this time of year but will give it my all. Im looking forward more and more to the leblon. I don't see myself collecting cachaca like I do rum but I do have A bottle of vodka, gin, tequila, etc. at my home bar for those whose taste buds haven't developed fully yet.;) Im thinking at the worst its a good idea to keep a bottle of leblon cachaca on the shelf as well.
I've drank caipirinha in the past but did not know that cachaca was the main ingredient; I thought it was white rum.
Since I was in some pretty cheap resort, maybe it was white rum anyway!
Looking forward to it.Btmup.gif

Hmm... I'll need to get busy. Haven't seen any Leblon closer to Dallas than Houston. Hope my local store can run it down. Is it very hard to find in the states?
Edward Hamilton

Leblon is available in almost every state. I'll get an email address to post here to help you find it.

There's a lot of places online that'll ship. I think Texas is pretty liberal (sorry, I couldn't resistparty1.gif) when it comes to alcohol shipping...and I know shoppers vineyard has a sale on the ED12 right now...

RJ,
I couldn't get my hands Leblon down here on the island and none of mules were in the air. Sooooooooo I'll be drinking MGXO tonight with a few buddies on a recently purchased 51' Sea Ray. It's a dream, in fact in my dreams I see me owning this beauty but then morning comes and I'm reminds that my boat is only 21'laughing.giflaughing.giflaughing.giflaughing.gi foops.gif.
Enjoy the chat, I'll be in for next month for sure.

Well, you can't have everything. But I'd trade you weather in the Bahamas for more than a bottle of rum.
Finally, I won't be able to make it due to family obligations. That's too bad because last month was a blast. Nothing like a rum buzz on a Wednesday night. I fear that next month will be a no-show as well because it will be near impossible to find the Chairman's Reserve since it is not sold in Canada.

Yes Ed we can't have everything, the weather has been good for this time of year all things considered.cheers.gif
