I thought I would just share with my fellow rum lovers a little project I started yesterday with some old French rhum labels, a beat up old table from the hardware store and some paper glue. I just have to add several coats of clear coat varnish to finish the project.
I had several old Fench rhum labels I had collected many years ago just wasting away in album and decided it would be better to see them everyday. So I thought I would read up about the hobby of decoupage and do a table top and place the table near my bar. So far so good, even the wife approves, which is pretty good since she has to put up with about 700 bottles of rum, an old barrel (even though varnished), a small copper pot still, numerous small barrels and several rum posters, etc., etc. lying around our apartment.
I like collecting labels off bottles, but some just do not co-operate. If anybody has any ideas how to get labels off please let me know.

Nice table. I lost several hundred labels when my boat sunk a few years ago. The newer acetate labels are harder to get off the bottles than the old paper labels which sometimes dissolved. I look forward to seeing that in person someday.

Very nice! I plan to do that soon with cigar bands that I have collected.

Have you tried the label lift removers that they make for wine labels? I don't know if it's exactly what you want because they add a layer of lamination to the label that I don't believe can be removed, but they do work.

I thought I would show a close up of the table before clear coat applied.
IPerry, I haven't tried the wine label remover, but will investigate more as I hate throwing away bottles with labels that do not come off. I'm always soaking bottles in the sink!!

I think that table is great - very nice work (both making the table and emptying all those bottles!)

Good luck on applying the clearcoat - please share more photos once you're all done!

Joe I gotta figure out how to load some larger photos. First coat of clear coat just applied. I have the fan on drying it so I can get another coat on today.
Those labels are way before my time unfortunately. But I love trying to get labels off all the bottles I finish. Going hunting for some wine label removers right now.

this might do more harm than good but my father-in-law makes his own wine and his own wine labels. So when a bottle of the store bought stuff is finished he steams (using household clothing iron) off the current label to replace it with his own.

The steaming works great for his needs but since you want to preserve the labels.....maybe a hybrid method???
