Hi everybody, so it is my brother's birthday in a couple weeks and so I was looking for a good gift for him, and since I know he definatly enjoys his alcohol (he brews his own beer) I figured a nice bottle of something that isnt Sierra Nevada would be a good thing.
As my username suggests, I dont drink myself (alcohol just doesnt agree with my tongue or stomach, i've tried various beers, wines, whiskey, and vodka and havnt really found anything that my tongue doesnt find revolting), so I really have no experience in picking out something good. So who better to ask than a forum dedicated to it.

Anyways, after some recon with one of his housemates, heres pretty much as decent of a profile as I can get for him: He loves Sierra Nevada beer, brews his own Oatmeal stouts, enjoys wines but cant really get specific, he likes whiskey, and he likes rum. The roommate isnt into rums himself, but commented that while he likes Myers Rum, my brother thinks it is trash.

So, any really solid rum recommendations? I've budgeted around $40 for the present, so single or multiple bottles are doable as long as they come to the total, though i'd like him to be wow'd by it (not the price but the quality of what he tastes).

Thanks!

Welcome SoberAl.

Mount Gay Extra Old, Appleton Extra or Ron Zacapa Centenario may fit your brother's taste.

Thanks!Given your end statement you might consider a bottle of Mocambo 20 year old rum @ $39.99.

In that range I'd recommend Zacapa, Vizcaya, or El Dorado 15. Can't go wrong with any of them, and all run just about $40. All three can be sipped with nothing but a single cube of ice or splash of water if anything at all...

Vizcaya VXOP is about $35 to $40, and it's a dynamite sipping rum even for those new to the spirit.

Al - you're a great brother to go through all this trouble!

My brother would have gone to a liquor store and got me $40 worth of Captain Morgan - if he got me anything at all!

I agree with the recommendations so far (especially Vizcaya VXOP and Ron Zacapa 23 anos) if your budget is a firm $40.

However, if you're willing to stretch to $50, and you really want to wow him, check out the Ron Zacapa XO rum. It's usually more than $100, but this one place has it for $50. I highly recommend it at this price.

Yes! What a great price. A very nice rum, even at $100.00. Also, it sports an impressive decanter style bottle. glass.gif

Thanks for all the suggestions. Based on the suggestions, and of those suggestions what I can pickup at Bevmo (dont know any other large scale alcohol store, and buying online isnt really an option cause shipping on a Vizcaya VXOP is like $18), i'm gonna go with either the Mt Gay Extra Old or the Zapaca 23.
I appreciate all the help guys, thx!

Basically the Zacapa is a sweet rum and the Mt Gay Extra Old is not. I really like them both.
