I recently received one of the most flavour laden rums I have ever tasted. Thanks to Rumdog007 this rum came in time for a few large samples just before Xmas.
The rum is called Smith and Cross Traditional Jamaica Rum from London and is bottled at "Navy Strength" 57% Alc/Vol. Apparently it is a blend of rum from the Plummer and Wedderburn Pot Stills in Jamaica.
Smith and Cross can trace their roots back to refining sugar in London near the river Thames where they also aged their rums in caverns under the river.
The nose is very strong and flavourful lighting up the room. The taste is just as strong and amazing. If you like a lot of flavour in your rum this is the one for you. I could still taste this rum the next morning and it had me hooked. I couldn't wait to get home and try another glass. I have only tried it straight and on the rocks but it would be a great mixer where a strong rum flavour is desired.
More research on this rum is needed by me and then I will do a review on my site with some photos. I know Dood likes it aswell as he named it his rum of the year for 2009. Hopefully this rum will become more widely available and I won't have to get it shipped out from California.
One of the best surprises of 2009.

It takes more than a little to turn your head when it comes to rum.

Actually, now that I think about it...Your head turns pretty easily...In a good way.

Such high praise from you, Dood, dog007 and Michael makes for a must try!

Smith & Cross is a very good rum - high proof, but extremely flavorful. I used it last night to make a batch of rum barrel cocktails - very nice the way it stood up and came through among all the other flavors.

There is no doubt that Smith & Cross (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=933) comes through in cocktails. There's a lot of flavor to be savored in that Jamaica pot still rum.

I tried this one at the tasting in NYC in the fall. It was served in a rum punch that I would have to give a B+, only because I think the punch detracted from the great rum flavor. I am dieing to try this in a grog. Little water, little brown sugar, little lime, and a whole lot of my lips on the glass. This rum sounds like it is right up your alley rumelier. Heavy molasses, navy proof, distinguished english style taste. Sounds like its found a good home.

Thanks Rumdog007 I can now sample at my pleasure!!
James, this was just such a pleasant change from all the new light bodied sweet rums that are being introduced to the market. So much flavour for a young rum and like I said, a rum you can still taste the next morningdrooling.gif

this rum is excellent! I received a bottle for Christmas. I found the aroma to be sweet/bold/and clean. The flavour is very rich with molasses (and to me) rasiney.

It can be ordered from Drink Up NY.
