The lure of the tropics

A long time ago in Ocho Rios, I spoke with a gent from Germany who had just completed his crossing of the Atlantic on his sailboat, all by himself. We were on the dock, it was late evening, the rum punch tasted great, and I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the moment. Today, as I recalled that visit from the distant past, it occurred to me that there are probably quite a few MOR members who have sailed the tropical seas and feel that "something" that I felt so long ago. Maybe it is a connection with all who have braved the waves in order to land in paradise. I lack the vocabulary to describe it, but I remember palm trees waving in the tropical breeze, and I felt like I was in a special place, distinct from the many other places I have hung my hat in this world.

Does anyone else feel that "something" when the anchor is dropped in those luminous blue waters?

Of all the places I've dropped anchor I wouldn't call Ocho Rios a tropical paradise for sailors anymore. But there is certainly something intoxicating about floating on warm tropical water and having the wind in your hair and a blue sky overhead, even when it's raining.

It sure beats the dull grey of winter in higher latitudes.

Yes I know that feeling extremely well. Unfortunately the last time I experienced the tropics was last New Year's when I spent about a week in Negril, Jamaica. It's kind of commercialized now, but there are a few places off the beaten path that appreciative cabbies will take you to if you slip them a few extra bucks. As far as sailing goes, I've only piddled in the Pamlico sound in NC. My Irwin 28' is in no shape to get me anywhere south of Florida (although I do hope to make a trip to Key West this summer).

But you're right; the tropics are intoxicating. It's as if time takes on an entirely new dimension. One day, my friend, and I will be down there on a continuous basis with a larger, more accomodating vessel!
