Rum Hunt

Happy Holidays to all at the MOR.
Question for the more well traveled members :

If one were to vacation in the carribean, with the main intention being the aquisition of rums.

1-Would you go on a cruise, which would get you only to the so called "ports" and tourists gift shops and overpriced excursions, and take the risk of finding a private guide to take you where you really need to go, without getting ripped.
or,
2- Go to one particular island, say Trinidad? as a base, which also gives you access to the mainland and other islands without the company of 3000 others.

3- You cannot afford a private yacht charter

Which, where, how ?

Lastly- You aquire a nice stash, and want it to get home safe.
Can you have it packed and shipped before going to an airport? Or,
Have it safely packaged somewhere and check the case as luggage?

I'd imagine if done right, you'd actually get to see the real culture, meet some great people, and of course sample the regional products not easily found in the USA. A dream trip!

1. Cruises suck, you land with a bunch of morons in your way wearing hawaiian shirts, sneakers, socks up to just below the knees, wide brimmed recently bought hat, cheesy sun glasses, and a camera hanging from the neck. Also if a cruise ship stops in 4 or 5 ports I usually only really want to see 1 or 2 of them.

2. Go to an island that doesn't import a lot to the US. IE MARTINIQUE, GUADALUPE, GRENADA, DR, etc... For island vacations I look for 3 things. Rum, historical sites, and natural sites. An island allows you to do all 3 where a cruise does not.

Last, if you and your wife go most airlines will allow you to stow 4L in your luggage. Thats 10 750ml between the two of you. There is also the duty free on the way out. And since a lot of island flights go thru Puerto Rico if you stop there there is no limit to the duty free purchase. As for shipping I am looking into that a little bit but haven't found anything yet.
