I just returned recently from St Barth's and St. Martin. I was down for the Jimmy Buffet concert celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Le Select.
In the duty free in St. Martin, I found a bottle of Neisson Rhum Vieux.
This is not the Reserve Speciale that I already have, that is available here. This is the older rhum, 8 to 10 years of age, I believe. I was also able to get another bottle of the XO. I now have all 5 Neissons, from the blanc to the XO. As an agricole lover, this makes me very happy!

Hi Hank,
If you every need a travel buddy I'm your guy. I need about 5 minutes notice.
What was the cost of the Neisson Rhum View and Xo in St Martin. I almost bought each onlIine in England last week. Its a great feeling when you can make a great find.

I'm jealous, Jimmy Buffett has a special place in his heat for St Barts and Le Select. Neisson has a few rhums that aren't sold in the US but I'm trying to remedy that situation.

That sounds great to me. I'd have to say that Neisson is my favorite of the agricoles but this means just about nothing as I haven't tried that many and not as much Neisson as I'd like. Hank it might be nice if you did a review comparing all five. We'd be in your debt...again.

The cost was $55 at the duty free. As far as doing a tasting of all 5, I will put that on thelist of things to do! The XO was purchased on St Barth's, it is the only place I have seen it. It runs about $120 US, and to me, it is worth it!

Dear Ron James: Sorry for your dilemma or more lack of opportunity to sample the agricoles state side. However, if you look you can readily now find St. James, Depaz, Clement and La Favorite in limited varieties. The real find though will be if you can capture a bottle of Rhum Bally, perhaps the best rhum ever made on Martinique and now almost extinct save some reserves being bottled by another company. Let me know if you find it. Regards, Chester

I'll have to look for the Bally, thanks chester. From what I've tried I tend to think clement just isn't my style as much as other agricoles.

Hi RonJames,
If you happen to cross the border, there's a Bally available in Quebec:

Merci beaucoup Ben, I should be making the trip again this spring, will have to bring some back! I've actually found quebec to be a surprising gold nugget for rum. One of my best rum experiences (which says a lot) was at a hotel bar in old quebec having a the most gracious bar tender pour me a dram of the HC 15anos free of charge. The MBL from appleton and HC line are reason enough to make the trip but throw in Bally and its a slam dunk.

Do you mean l'Auberge St-Antoine? I think it was my recommendation.

Hi,
I've been over their at chrismas it is a very small and familly owned factory.
They produce very strong rhums.
I love their cuvée du 3ème millénaire but if you go over their ask to buy a vintage: I bought a 1992 for 150euros and on the net you find it for more than 350euros and it is very hard to find it!
But If you don't have enough money to aford you those two cuvées I would recommend you to try the xo from Depaz much cheeper and much more delicate.
cheers
And If anybody need an information on a french rhum don't hesitate to contact me!

lalie this is an area where I need to further my research, I think they ship all the good agricoles to France and try to keep agricole rhum secret:p

hi,
I personaly prefere rum and ron instead of rhum but...
For the agricol I love it of course but some time when you are bellow an xo it may appear too strong too woddy a bit dry and with a vegetal taste.
So agricol aged rhum are automaticaly expensive. But the white rums are very flavored... :-)
If you want to buy some rhums from Martinique contact this guy
www.rhumclub.com
Even if the rhum you whant is not listed he will find it for you!
He sold me some bottle and I was very happy by the price.
If you have any question don't hesitate!
cheers

Hi Lalie,
Hello from a cousin in Quebec.
L'Arbre du Voyageur rhum extra vieux agricole 2001 is available here for sale at 158.50$. I was curious to know how much you have to pay for it in France?

The old Depaz rhum is very nice, well balanced and delicate for rhum agricole.

hi ben
For your information:
http://www.dugas.fr/rhum/chantal_comte/ch_comte_l_arbre_du_voyageur_reserve_speciale_2001/details.htm
you will see that this vintage is a rum from la favorite 7yrs
I love the rum from la favorite but I never bought a single bottle of chantal comte I think they are really to expensive
For the price of the chantal comte bottle (7yrs) you got the "privilège" 600 bottle per year and it is a 25 yrs...you decide what to buy but... :-)
cheers
Merci Lalie pour l'information,
So I would understand that the price is likely based on quantity less than quality. I did not know it was only a 7yrs.
That Cuvée Privilège looks interesting, too bad it's not available here. We had the Cuvée Flibustier at one point, but the price was over 200$.

Maybe the price is justified but the limited production but also by the uniqueness of the selection!
well if you test it don't forget to add a comment I will be interested to read it.
Cheers
I tasted l'Arbre du Voyageur once, in a restaurant in Quebec City. It was selling around 17$ a glass, which was a deal. I remember finding it delicious, very smooth for an agricole. I would easily spend 80$ on it, but 160$ is a bit expensive.
