Before drinking Rums, I enjoyed Scotch. Never liked Bourbon, which is admittedly strange, since Scotch and Bourbon are at their core very similar animals both aged in oak barrels. But Bourbon doesn't do it for me and Scotch does ...... so it goes.

But back to rum. I usually separate rums into "Bourbon-like" which I give to my Bourbon-drinking friends who enjoy them (aged Appleton, Mount Gay, Cockspur) vs. rums that have the flavors I love in rum --- carmel, vanilla, butterscotch, sweet, smooth flavor that excludes the distasteful (to my taste buds) flavor of Bourbon. I love Zacapa, Zaya, Tortuga, English Harbor, and Pampero.

So tonight I opened my first bottle of Mocambo, which I found at Sams ---oops "Binnys" ---(although they still have Sams over the door and took my gift-certificate for Sams, but the Sams website is gone and now re-directs you to "Binnys").

Mocambo is enclosed in a bottle that appears to have come off an old shipwreck. Vegetation strands (palm?) criss-cross the bottle and although cool-looking, make opening the darn thing a little tougher than necessary. The color is a dark amber, and the nose is ..... dark, smooth, complex. The flavor seemed to have some cogeners that burn, unexpected in a single barrel aged 20 year old rum, but the flavor to my palate was quite unique. Hmmmmm, I taste smoke on the back of my throat. With an ice cube, I rather enjoyed the flavor and sat for 30 minutes with 2 oz thinking about it, hoping to describe it but coming up short. It is NOT butter, or vanilla, or bourbon, there isn't a fruit flavor, nor butterscotch. Its not really sweet, not like a Guatemalan Zaya or Zacapa.

I got it.

Its the first rum I've ever tasted that tastes reminiscent of Scotch. It has the smokey, peat flavor of a good mellow Scotch like Glenmorangie or Johnnie Walker Black, but sweeter ---- it truly is a rum. I wouldn't want Mocambo every day, but I definitely enjoy, and appreciate, the uniqueness of this rum.

Great write up Mike. You should post your review in the MoR database under Mocambo 20.

I agree it's unique and very good. I like it very much.

Yes, and it is good too! But it cost almost as much as the XX aсos...(whatever that means..) . . . The 10 is good too.
