Hi all

well, yes, I am new here and need all the help I can get.

Rhum, or is is rum?, agricole, is it only made on the French islands?

So, is Rhum agricole the same, or close to, unfiltered whiskey?

I do like Pyrat Rum and Dorado Rum.

How will a Rhum agricole be compared to that?

Have a good evening

Rhum agricole is about as different as you can get from pyrat and El Dorado. IMHO a good ti punch (made with rhum agricole blanc) tastes like a margarita but even better with more sweet than salty sour.

Rhum Agricole differs from most rums in that it is made from distilling fermented sugar cane juice rather than fermented molasses.

In the French Islands they refer to molasses-based rums as Rhum Industriel (industrial rum instead of agricultural rum).

For molasses-based rums, sugar cane is processed into sugar and molasses is produced as a waste product of the sugar manufacturing. This molasses is then mixed with water and yeast to create a molasses wine, that is then distilled into rum (much like whiskey is beer - minus the hops - until it is distilled).

For agricoles they make no sugar. They crush the cane and extract the fresh juice. That juice is then mixed with yeast and water and allowed to ferment into a sugar cane wine. This wine is then distilled into rhum agricole.

That's the difference, somewhat "distilled."

Since Martinique and Guadeloupe are overseas departments of France and hence incur no import duties, the availability of Rhum Agricole is excellent in that country.

There was a previous thread concerning:
