Yes and no. Rum generally (though not always) utilizes molasses as both a nutrient for the fermentation step as well as for flavor. Also, rum distilleries generally (though not always) tend to distill with flavor in mind. Cachaзa tends to be produced in more massive scales and quicker, thus a bit "funkier" depending on the brand you drink. If you get a cheap rum, it can be as bad or worse.
